Photobucket scam

Photobucket scam - 07/11/17 02:24 PM
So it looks like photobucket has pulled the rug on all of its users and is essentially blackmailing folks to get their photographs in storage back. For us forum users using the service to post images it is quite unfortunate, indeed! All old posts containing photobucket-linked images will now instead display broken links (including signitures and avatars). The worst part is in order to activate image hosting they are asking for 400$ PER YEAR. Yes you read that right, 400$!

I've got a ton of photos in my account.
They used to be great but are now [Bleeeeep!]. They've put no resources into their website and apps to make it a better experience for the end users.
I personally hope they go out of business.

I got an email from them detailing the changes and asking for $400.
Since then, it doesn't work.
That ain't going to be happening....

Do you guys have Facebook accounts?

Re: Photobucket scam - 07/11/17 09:13 PM
From reading a few articles their filtering of users/images has been inconsistent at best. Some people, and also some older files are unaffected...they're going to crash and burn with this stunt absolutely. No way in hell will anyone pay 400$ a year for image hosting.... sh!t you can stream almost any TV program at home for about 20% of that cost....
Good riddance Photobucket. Have fun dying.

I just saw that yesterday as I was trying to view an automotive tutorial. Really dumb on their part, especially with how bloated the site is with advertising.

Re: Photobucket scam - 07/12/17 09:42 AM
Weird, those work, but my avatar doesn't. Maybe it depends on how long the picture has been up online? They run web scans or something?
It seems like they might be making the changes in batches. It seems like mine still work for now built I've seen others post that theirs still work only to come back later and say they are now broken. If yours still work and Photobucket is the only location you have them, best see if you can download them and save them locally. Some people can't even do that now and are being offered options to download them if they are willing to pay. Real sleazy style for sure, especially given how poorly out interface works, especially on mobile devices.

Yep..the welfare people will pay the ransom, but anyone who works all day, every day, is much less likely willing to invest $400 of their hard-earned dollars just to host some pics.

Re: Photobucket scam - 07/13/17 12:14 PM
Switch to Imgur or google photos. Imgur is stupid easy from basically every platform.
people on welfare can afford 400 bucks to pay for cloud storage?
interesting....

Mine still "works", but did note all photos have character string attached to name so havent tried saving yet. Site bogs down older mac and I have the originals somewhere so not totally worried....I got what I paid for(free). Hooked a monster ling today trolling for salmon with 1" mini glo squid behind chartreuse flasher(fish last week was stuffed with tiny white squid) at Hummer hole in area 7 for anyone in derby....didn't net it but wouldn't fit in net.....thought it was a halibut on way up

Glad it worked for you fp. It may not have as many features as Photobucket but it's simple and has a good mobile app.

ImageShack did the same ransom thing a couple of years ago.
Been using TinyPic, but probably only a matter of time.....

Re: Photobucket scam - 11/12/17 01:34 PM
How's the Imgur thing working out for all you guys that switched?
My pics have been working because I have a pay account (PB Pro = $39/yr) and as a paying customer, I was given some extra time to keep posting pics from that account.
However, I got my ransom notice the other day. Time is SHORT. Hate to see some excellent pic threads on various boards become TOTALLY useless.

What is a "ton of pictures"??????? I just moved 25 pics in about a minute then I quit.
cut and paste......I moved single pics, don't know if I can do a "ton of pictures", this way.
You might have to go to Photo Bucket and delete pictures that are "NOT THAT IMPORTANT"..........cut from a ton to something less.....
Thing is......once on your desktop, then you can save to any numbers of things....thumb drives, SD card, etc.

I'd be happy to help clarify this for you. Imgur allows hotlinking on forums, but hotlinked images cannot be used as content for a website, including blog posts, avatars, site elements, and advertising. Let me know if I can help further!
What we do here seems fine to me. Another alternative may be google photos, but imgur has a better interface for uploading/sharing.

Re: Photobucket scam - 11/13/17 10:34 AM
fp, you need to get the actual image url if you want to include it in the post. The actual image url will end in ".jpg" The link you have is to a page that basically "wraps" or contains the image.
If you're on a PC you should be able to right click on the image and select "Copy image address" or something similar and you'd get this:
https://i.imgur.com/5ZjBDYL.jpg on your clipboard.
Then put that in the img tags.

Re: Photobucket scam - 11/13/17 12:32 PM
YOU need to add a SLASH in the second [/img] tag.
