Some boats repel fish. - 08/12/17 09:28 AM

Hi Guys
I came to another revelation this summer while chatting with a Great Lakes customer on my voltage tuned tackle. He was using an older 19 ft Starcraft on Lake Ontario and claimed that for years, he had not been able to catch fish without having 150 to 200 ft of line out behind his boat. I had made a video a couple of years ago about outboards, zincs and aluminum boats, and sent him a link. When I next heard from him, he had caught a 17 lb chinook while letting his downrigger weight down about 10 ft. All it took was a jumper wire! Aluminum is one of the worst culprits, but also the easiest to fix.
This can also effect glass and wood boats, in fresh or salt water. My first commercial troller (wood) would not catch sockeye the first year off the mouth or the Fraser River. I used the same tackle as everyone else, but mostly drank coffee and watched the other boats. Mine was not an isolated case among trollers.
I cannot be more sincere when I say that fish are more sensitive than we can imagine, and our boat's signature is a big key in being successful, even when the fish are down 200 ft.
For those trolling a tin boat on lakes and with an electric motor, try dangling a piece of zinc off the transom and wired to the boat. Here is a link to one clip.

Yes, I believe this to be true.

My aluminum jet boat went from zero to killer in two zincs.
