Bob's book on the Skeena Steelhead, about a decade ago, noted that the fastest growing population in the watershed was FN peoples. Even if all they do is subsistence fishing and even if they eat every fish they catch, at some point there are more mouths to feed than the river can produce fish. Couple the growing FN population with downstream commercial fishing that didn't give a rip about anything but short-term profits and you blow the stocks away.

The Canadians are just catching up on Pacific Salmon following our lead on salmon and theirs on cod.

I think they're just looking at another Chinook closure, with an average sockeye season, which means average collateral damage impacts to steelhead.

From what I have been reading the Skeena Chinook are in lots of trouble and the sockeye are not far behind. There is a lot of animus up there as regards the way DFO manages the salmon for the corporate fisheries rather than individual netters.

One of the major complaints from the NI side is that the FN's do not retain pink or steelhead that are taken as neither is a desired subsistence fish.

There is quite a bit of screaming going on up there as many perceive that DFO is favoring net pens over wild fish and Fns over the rest. It actually seems uglier there than here.
