MA-9 King opener

MA-9 King opener - 07/22/19 09:09 PM

I'll be fishing mid-channel and Pt. Townsend with the hoards on Thursday. I'll be camping at Ft. Flagler because I read that the launch at Ft. Worden is closed(?). Anyone else going to be camping?

Used my fishing reservation to do a bit of crabbing and cultural type stuff at Pt T last week. Had a great time, got some sun and enough crab to make it worthwhile. Good luck!

We’ll be down inside out of Edmonds.

Can’t wait!

How did you get spot at Flagler? That place fills up quick before any season announcement. If I have to I will run North, but hoping to find something South. This weather change today is a good thing to move fish.

Dumb luck! I looked this week and they had a cancellation so there I'll be tomorrow to get the boat in the water.

Wife and I were planning to Target pinks off the beach at worden this weekend. Couldn't get a spot at flagler or worden or the rv place in South pt. Hoping we can go early Friday and get something at the fair grounds which is apparently first come first serve.

Lotta boats at Flagler and the dock was full last night. Lots and lots of rods at Mid-channel but not many nets flying. We brought a wild 12-13#er to the boat but that was it for us.

Re: MA-9 King opener - 07/25/19 02:29 PM

One friend reported 0 fish at Midchannel at 10:00, started fishing at dawn.

We got 2 at 11 Lbs 1/2 mi north of Kingston ferry dock, 160' of water found a huge bait ball, pulled and released 3 wilds about the same size as the 2 keepers. Fished spoons, coho killers, whole herring without success for about 1/2 hour each on different rods, then put on Goldstar 3.5" OG158R hoochie (glow off-white bottom, green splatterback tophalf with dark green spine) and got all 5 kings in 90 minutes off the baitball.
Not a lot of nets, did not see any bigger fish taken. About 150 boats at 7:00 a.m.

Tried for coho at Jeff Head closer to shore for 30 minutes without luck. I just don't think they are here yet (ressies don't count).

One keeper king @ 11 lbs. for 3 1/2 hours at PNP. White hoochie over smaller bait balls than ned found.

Only made it out long enough to drop crab pots in MA 10 yesterday. Might get some fishing time today. Will definitely hit it this weekend.

Re: MA-9 King opener - 07/26/19 01:34 PM

WDFW used to post percentages of quota on the PS creel report page.
I looked today but didn’t see anything.

Did that feature / information disappear when they upgraded the website or is buried in there somewhere else?

Re: MA-9 King opener - 07/29/19 08:25 AM

Fished Sunday morning on the west side of Possession. Lost a nice king and released a wild ocean coho and a couple shakers. That was it for us. Back at shilshole I talked to a boat that got a three person limit at Jeff Head (3 kings, 2 coho, and a pink)

Re: MA-9 King opener - 07/29/19 03:36 PM

Pretty weak effort by WDFW updating the quotas.
I know it takes a bit of time to look at the data, but they used to update them much more frequently.
Hell, they even post creel checks at various locations daily.
MA 11 opened earlier but hasn't been updated since 7/15, so two weeks without an quota update.

I guess the updated quotas for 9 & 10 will be...."they are closed".....
Nothing like keeping folks in the dark after less then generous four day season.

Re: MA-9 King opener - 07/31/19 03:24 PM

Can anyone figure out how 680 out of 2,805 is 53% of the quota in MA 11?
New WDFW math.....
MA 9 and 10 look correct.

Re: MA-9 King opener - 07/31/19 08:54 PM

I saw that too. . .I think maybe they didn't update the numerator there, as I'm certain we're well over 25% Actually, I'd be surprised if we're currently at only 53%, I was thinking we'd be well past that now. Would be nice to see it hold up through the third week of August,

See that the MA 11 encounter number has been updated (corrected?) to 1477; math now works!

Re: MA-9 King opener - 08/02/19 03:49 PM

Marine Area 7 is closed to fishing for salmon during the month of August.

Marine Area 9 is open to hatchery Chinook salmon retention through Aug. 4 with the exception of the section south of a line from Foulweather Bluff to Olele Point, which is closed to all salmon fishing. Fishing for salmon species other than Chinook will remain open in marine area 9 from Aug. 5 through September 30.

Anglers must release sockeye salmon in Marine Area 12 through September 30, 2019.

Marine Area 10 is currently open to hatchery Chinook retention through August 31 but may close earlier if the harvest quota is attained.
