Morel mushrooms on west side? - 05/13/22 08:17 AM

I haven't done the mushroom thing much, but can you find morels on the west side of the mountains in low elevation woody areas? I know old burn areas are great, just curious if anyone finds them around typical suburban woods areas.

Yes. Look for large cotton wood trees.

A lot of the westside morels are false morels. An early morel, verba bohemica, is commonly found around cottonwoods. I have gathered them and eaten them, but quit after I found out that they contain a toxin requiring par boiling to neutralize. Neither my wife, nor I cared much for the taste of false morels. Waterboy is correct. Look for them in stands of mature black cottonwoods. The bigger, the better.
