Alaska bound - 08/02/06 06:31 PM

I catch my flight to Anchorage tomorrow night. Then it's off to Dillingham, thence to some little river or creek that's hopefully big enough to float the raft. Then a liesurely week of casting to wild rainbow trout. Last year they were very hungry for the deer hair mouse, and I'm hoping for a repeat. Just in case they aren't, I've got sculpin and marabou and bunny leech patterns, too. And the dry fly box in case there's grayling, altho last year they ate the mouse patterns, too.

I'll post a report when I get back and a link to the Salmo page photo album.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Back from the Arolik R and Wood R. This was another adventure, and the fishing was good also. I'll try to get some of the photos onto the Salmo page this week. Caught Artic char for the first time; they are a gamey fish full of fight, on either the 5 wt grass stick or 7 wt graphite. Caught silvers on a wog for the first time, and that was great fun to watch them come like a shark, dorsal fin out of the water, before they smashed the fly. Those Alaska silvers are all biters, I swear. Not so many rainbow this year, nor as large, but enough to keep me interested.

Oh, and was introduced to the nightlife at the Sea Inn in D'ham. Kareoke was performed Eskimoke style by some chunky ladies who like to sing. Then everybody, of all age groups including granny and gramps, dance to the DJ's rap and hiphop selections. A nice native chick who was barely overweight that I didn't dance with came by and gave me a condom. Justin and Ron said she wanted me bad. I'd only been away from home a week, and I wasn't quite desparate.

Muddy Rudder was good, but we usually got back into town after closing and had to fix dinner at the house.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

I fished the Arolik once three years ago. Very cool river! We ran up river from the mouth until we had less than a quarter tank of gas, and then floated our way down. The bows and grayling were great fun, and my brother even managed to mouse up a nice king!
Good times
