May 30th SRCs

May 30th SRCs - 05/31/07 10:24 AM

Spent a nice long day out on the water yesterday chasing sea-runs. We fished from about 9-330. A hell of a lot longer than i normally spend after cutties, but it was well worth it. Lots of fish and sun.
We started off just on the tail end of the outgoing tide fishing a little point. Not much current movement but we were able to locate some fish and hook into a couple of very nice ones. I was able to land one around 18 inches and my friend lost one that was bigger. pictures to follow, but this fish i caught had seaweed growing off his gillplate. I had never seen that before. looked like an old injury that was trying to heal.
We fished that same point for about an hour before moving on and trying a bunch of other areas that we hadnt hit before. We saw a few big cutties, but we got a lot of chasers yesterday that just wouldnt quite commit fully and eat the fly.
There was a bad algea bloom yesterday in some areas as well that made for tough fishing with murky water and lots of floating crap on the surface.
Once the tide started to come in and the current started to move, we headed down to a beach we know to produce on the flood tide. sure enough there were tons of cutties along the beach and we must have fished there for 3 or 4 hours catching a ton of fish. unfortunately we couldnt find any quite as big as at our first spot but the fish were so numerous that it was almost a fish every cast.
I fished almost every fly i have yesterday. Trying to see what i couldnt catch fish on. My biggest fish came on a chartruese and yellow clouser while most of the time i fished a new dart that i have started to tie. olive/white clousers and little baitfish patterns also picked up fish for us.
hopefully my buddy got some good pics and i will try to put them up soon. One hell of a day to spend on the water.

it looks like you got this fishery dialed in, man. I am still in the early stages of getting it. Not much luck so far:(

and sometimes it just doesnt work out that way. Only got 1 tonight. brutal!!! Murky water and lots of crap on the surface made for some tough conditions.

oh it happens, but i dont like it!!!

They were there, i just think the combination of detrimental factors hurt me too much to get any good action. High slack, sea weed, and algea bloom.... not a good combo. I only fished for about 20 minutes. It was good to run around in the boat anyways.

All right! I finally got success today catching a bunch of those SRCs in about an hour or less. I was fishing at about 1-3 pm, and the tide was coming in pretty fast, it looked like a river water. I found them by throwing the popper fly that I tied the other day, and then switched to clousers and started to hook them or get hits almost on every cast. It was amazing. No big ones yet, but they will come.

I actually got some good hits on the chum fry fly I tied, but no hookups. I had to leave, so I did not catch anything on it, but they should still work out there.

NICE!!! good job. odds are you will be able to find fish at the spot, on those tide conditions in the future.
went out this morning for an hour and got 3 little guys. Had one big fish show himself by chasing a little guy i had hooked up, but i couldnt find him again.

Thanks, I am still excited - that was awesome, and long time coming.

Now I have to find some good spots like that a bit closer to home, around BI or North Kitsap. Couple places I have been going to have not produced for me yet. Maybe I will go explorer the other side of the Hood canal bridge.
