Friday sea-run cutt -- and herring! -- report - 05/09/09 02:40 PM
Fished the big falling tide -- it was a minus tide -- Friday morning in a good South Sound inlet.
The cutts -- but nothing longer than 12 inches -- eagerly whacked chum fry patterns -- Bob Triggs' Chum Baby and Doug Rose's Keta Rose. There still is a lot of chum fry along the beaches, but these tiny fish are growing really fast, and I suspect they'll head off for the Pacific Ocean within a few weeks.
So, now is a good time to fish chum fry patterns -- while you still can.
Then a pod of herring showed up and hit the same flies.
I've fished Puget Sound since 1996, and I've never had herring hit my flies while I was standing on the beach.
