STEELHEAD FLY LEADERS-DARK vs. CLEAR - 07/07/14 10:29 PM

I would be interested to hear the opinions of Northwest Steelhead flyfishers re: dark leaders (Maxima Chameleon) vs. clear leaders.

Began using Maxima Chameleon in 1974 with immediate and consistent positive results. There are probably times of low clear water when clear leader material makes a difference, but my sample size is too small to form any definitive conclusion.

Used to use Chameleon for steelhead and coho leaders when I first started flyfishing for them.
Once I tried Ultragreen, I never used Chameleon for leaders again.

I have observed no real difference. I've also been amazed at how the chameleon stuff (at least in small diameters) all but disappears in clear water. Probably only for aesthetic reasons, I tend to use more ultragreen. I'm pretty sure the biggest problem I have catching steelhead is finding them, especially so far this summer.

Well said. I don't think my tippet choice is scaring away any fish. I also use Ultragreen (that's what my mentor uses and kinda drilled into me) but I don't think steelhead are "leader-shy" in any way. I think they are just really hard to find! wink
