Re: STEELHEAD FLY LEADERS-DARK vs. CLEAR - 07/08/1401:04 PM
Began using Maxima Chameleon in 1974 with immediate and consistent positive results. There are probably times of low clear water when clear leader material makes a difference, but my sample size is too small to form any definitive conclusion.

Used to use Chameleon for steelhead and coho leaders when I first started flyfishing for them. Once I tried Ultragreen, I never used Chameleon for leaders again. SF

I have observed no real difference. I've also been amazed at how the chameleon stuff (at least in small diameters) all but disappears in clear water. Probably only for aesthetic reasons, I tend to use more ultragreen. I'm pretty sure the biggest problem I have catching steelhead is finding them, especially so far this summer.

Well said. I don't think my tippet choice is scaring away any fish. I also use Ultragreen (that's what my mentor uses and kinda drilled into me) but I don't think steelhead are "leader-shy" in any way. I think they are just really hard to find!
