Question about the Snider hatchery program

Question about the Snider hatchery program - 02/06/01 02:19 AM

Question for Bob.

Ive heard rumors out here that the Snider program was going to be extended to the Clawah and Bogie in the near future. I knew that the Clawah part was in the works but had no Idea about the Bogie.

If so this is great, Bogie needs help worse than any of them. Because the Bogie is so easy to fish and float it has taken the worst hit on its wild runs. I can only remember what it used to be like "Hog Heaven". Not many of thoose big Christmas 20 plussers anymore. Come to think of it not many early natives at all and the late run is struggleing too. Heard the wild escapement was only around 3200 last year thats pretty sad when you look at how much spawning could be done in there.

OOOps ... sorry forgot this one was for me

Yes, the Guides' Association has the permits to expand this program to the Calawah and Bogachiel. It has been discussed some and frankly, we're not even sure if we could gather enough broodstock for this program. We're currently at odds with the state with how many we've been releasing into the systems ... we're at 50,00 smolt now in the Sol Duc, down from 100,000 per our somewhat reluctant agreement with the state to decrease the plants ... because "ther are too may fish", yeah, right

If we think we can get the extra revenue to do this, as well as the support from people to help donate, we'd like to give it a go!

Bob,
How could there every be "too many fish"? Without the broodstock program on the Sol Duc, what shape would things be in right now? I think it's a very commendable thing the guides association is doing for "OUR FUTURE". Just think of the impact without the effort... The State is willing to bargain the resource right up until extinction.

Keep up the good work Bob.
