Is the Vedder.... - 04/16/01 02:03 PM

I live in Bellingham and am thinking of purchasing a license for Canada fishing. The vedder river is one of the rivers that I will be interested in fishing. I am wondering if anyone has any comments about the fishing up there like the goods and the bads of it. I will be going up there for kings.

When does the season start?

Also if you have had any success where at and with what?

The Vedder River is a favorite mainly because there is tons of bank access and fishable water.I don't think there is a king season until Fall.If you are going for the first time, you probably want to hire a guide. He(or she) will show you alot of river and teach you how to float fish.I think the king fishery is mostly on the Frasier(not far from the Vedder)I have the name of a super guide if you are interested.just talking to him,you will get alot of info.Bigdog2250@yahoo.com

Check out Freds Custom Tackle for info on the Vedder (http://www.freds-bc.com/report.htm). You'll probably have to stop by and get your license there as well. They have maps showing the holes and they can tell you all you need to know.

Catcher,
The Vedder is a great river but we have huge problems with crowds and garbage. There is a run of about 2500 Springs(not Kings!) that show up around June and run through August Fishing is hit and miss, and the season opens July 1.In the fall some 50,000 white fleshed Springs show up. They are all yours as the locals detest these fish. We fish floats and wool ties and baggies, but I mainly just fish wool as its a waste to use good roe on these guys.
A guide is a good idea, look up Vic at STS guides. Check out this website http://www.coastangler.com/vedder_1.htm for reports on lower mailnland rivers and a descrition of the Vedder and it's run timings. If you come, good luck, most of the American guys I meet on the river are respectful to the fishery, but if you come avoid the crowds, there are more idiots on this river than I've ever seen.

I will second Vic at STS With a thumbs up, Vic is a great guy and will get you into fish if there are any to be had on that river.

That is a fairly large river and takes a long time to learn - it would be a good idea to go with somebody who can show you around. I would say to wait for the fall salmon rather than the springs.
