Depends how heavy of line you will be useing. If your using 10# and up Id go with a 4000, 8 and below id go with a 2000.

DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU LIKE TO CAST.I PREFER THE 251 BECAUSE IT HOLD MORE LINE AND IT CAST BETTER.BEST REEL MADE FOR CLEAN UP.I ALSO HAVE THE 4000 I CAN'T GET HAFT THE CAST WITH THIS THAT I CAN WITH THE 251.

Yup, what those guys said.

If you want a spinning reel and are not using heavy line, go with a 2000 series Shimano.

Start using line over 10 lb test, and I'd consider the 4000 series. But that's really a big reel. Way too big for silvers or reds....unless you're using 20lb main line and flipping for the reds on the Kenai. Actually, I'd use my steelhead rod/reel for reds on the Kenai.

(Can you elaborate on the red fishing? Are we talking the AK reds up on the Kenai? Lake Wa reds? Something else? I didn't think sockeye readily bit.)

If you're looking for the entry level Shimano bait caster, I'd go for the new Curado. Nice reel.

If you want a little nicer reel, I'd upgrade to the Calcutta. Want something a little better still, go with the Chronarch.

Personally, I use a Shimano 2000 series spinning reel and Loomis GL2 1082 spinning rod for silvers. Don't really need anything fancier, bigger, or heavier than that for silvers. You can save some pennies by getting an Allstar 1082. It's just as good as the Loomis but not as expensive.

Hope that helps.
