Chinook Size To Weight Ratio? - 10/01/01 12:31 AM

Does anyone have a reliable formula for figuring the weight of a chinook? I landed a big buck on the Sandy today. It measured 40.5 inches in length and had a girth of 26.75 inches just in front of the dorsal. I dont have a reliable scale and guessed it's weight at 38 to 40lbs? Can you help?

I don't know the specific formula but would agree, it would be in the 36 to 40 lbs. range. nice fish.

Using the length x girth x girth / 775 is the formula I've always used at that your fish would have weighed 37.39 lbs. NICE FISH MAN! In years past I've tested the formula and it seems to be within a pound.

Try this link for a weight calculation formula. Since the body mass densities differ in salmon and steelhead you have to use two separte formulas. Now don't go quoting me on this since I am just going off of what I've been told by RT. Then again RT seems to think that a lot of things are bigger than they really are :p

The formula on this page says that your fish was 44.5lbs. NICE!

Kid Sauk, I tried that formula on a fish that weighed 50.3lbs on a certified scale, it had the dimensions 46.5 length and 29.5 girth, that formula said the fish weighed 62 lbs. Think they need to check them figures

The correct formula for Kings:

fork lenght x girth squared divided by 800.
It is accurate, I got it from a fisheries
biologest.
