CHAT question for Bob

It's pretty obvious that the chat function is very popular. There have been several impromptu chats that were quite well attended. Not knowing muvh about websites I am wondering if it is possible to have something that tells us how many people are in the chatroom without actually entering the room? People might see that someone is intere and decide to join in instead of just leaving.. Anyway i don;t know if it's even possible it was just a thought.
