What pays the bills?

What pays the bills? - 03/04/02 07:11 PM

I posted this question on web page X and got a big response. What line of work are you in? Its pretty interesting all the different professionals that are on the BB. A lot of people on this BB have much in common. Networking within this "comminity" can be benificial.

BTW: I'm a Sales Manager for a Budweiser Wholesaler in Oregon.

Small Business Banker, VP. (biggest bank in the US) That means I have a cool title, but no power. Gotta be an SVP for that. I do loans and deposit products for small businesses (under 100 employees and less than $10 million in annual revenues). Thirty percent of my clients are in timber related industries. I get to do loans on cool toys like shovel loggers, feller bunchers, lot's of trucks, charter boats, etc. etc. etc. Got an industry related question? Fire away.

I'm the Art/Marketing Production Manager for a snowboard/skateboard manufacturing company. Basically, I sit on my A$$ behind a big computer screen all day.

We are one of the only remaining companies that build all our boards in the USA. All our competition has moved their production overseas, mostly to China.

We have a factory in Seattle and one in Sequim. We moved our department to the Sequim facility a year and a half ago, and I've fished a lot more as a result.

Hey Tyler,

HELL NO, I don't work for K2, (as they say, f*ck2) they are one of the ones that moved all their stuff to China. They went from a peak of 600 employees on Vachon to 20 now... no wonder the people there are still pissed as DJ said.

K2 owns Ride and Morrow, they are all made in China. So are most of the Burtons. Salomon's boards are made in Tunesia, there are lots of other boards made in eastern Europe, and then a bunch built in government-subsidized factories in Austria

There are only a few US snowboard manufacturers left, and I work for by far the biggest one, Mervin Manufacturing. We make Lib Tech and Gnu snowboards, snowskateboards, composite street skateboards and Bent Metal snowboard bindings.

I never thought this type of thread was quite appropriate on a fishing BB; but now I think otherwise. Very interesting too. Raises some questions and comments though. laugh [oh no, he must be on the meds again] No. Not for a good while now. wink ...

- Inquiring minds want to know what a Croupier is?
- Fishslayer; if you manage a Toyota service department I figure you have plenty of leaders tied up. If it's in a GM dealership, don't fish snaggy water. laugh
- Geez Craven, you're a retired giggalo too! Cool job until the bod goes, ay?
- BERKLEYBOY, I'M CURIOUS IF YOUR PRINTING CO. EVER DOES ANYTHING IN SMALL CASE LETTERING?
- Serious: I'm always proud of our soldiers, teachers (sort of similar jobs these days wink jk?), firemen/policemen, and hard working guides. I used to be 2 of those - P.E. teacher while coaching basketball and physical arts (don't ask), and a fishing guide.
- Hey Skywalker, after I got out of guiding I helped my older brother with his large business of making customized copper core electro-plating racks for many companies making circuit boards and like things (my sister-in-law sold the biz after my bro passed away in a small plane crash last year). We sold to such Co.'s as Beaverton's Techtronix and Dallas' Pragetzer's; I think some to Intel too for awhile.
- Hey B-RUN, coming from Idaho I figure your job as a semi-conductor is a lazy one for Am Track? laugh nah, jk - Micron Tech is a good company that the Boise area landed. Hope you are getting their stock in your 401K. And thanks for the 'inside trader' tip about the upcoming takeover. wink

Funny this thread should come up..... My profession is the very thing that has kept me off of this board as well as the rivers for the past month or so. I am a Union Operating Engineer, Local 612. I've been busy as hell lately. 60-70 hour weeks have pretty much insured that I wont even have time to post on this board, let alone go fishing.

Re: What pays the bills? - 03/05/02 11:38 PM

I have to admit, I used to have a real job like everyone else.

Worked in the tackle shop part time until I had to get a real job. Worked in recieving after school and on Sundays (worked at the tackle shop on Saturdays), in what used to be (they are now bankrupt and out of bussiness) one of the countries largest furniture retailers. After 8 months, got bored with the recieving, no challenge required so I asked if I could try out sales. To my surprise they said "Why not...", eventhough I was a 18 y.o punk kid with hair sticking straight up that varied between bleached blonde and jet black.

Long story short, management screwed up royally and everything went downhill. Was very tired of losing my commisions...one night I had a $8000 sale blow up in my face and walked out that night. The next day, I started working at the tackle shop full time. smile

Re: What pays the bills? - 03/08/02 11:28 AM

The big military contract Boeing lost was the Joint Strike Fighter to Lockheed (Boeing merged with McDonnel Douglas several years ago) last October. That was a lost opportunity of 3-5000 jobs in Puget Sound. Currently Commercial is in the process of laying off 30% (around 30000 jobs I think). Butt pucker times. I console with those of you that have lost your jobs, there are people with 20+ years going out the door.
Posted by: sinker

Re: What pays the bills? - 03/08/02 04:51 PM

There is still work around here that will be associated with the JSF. There's enough aerospace shops that there will be some jobs directly related to it.
It sounded like a really big deal at the time, but if you look at how many years all that money was spread over it didn't amount to much.
Everyone at work is hoping the 767 tanker contract will save the day. I'd guess since the gov't is involved it will be several years before they even start production and who knows how long they will drag it out.

Commercial is where it's at. Unfortunately, that isn't a good biz to be in right now. I think this slowdown was eventually going to take place pretty soon, Sept. 11th just sped it up.

Vise-president of second tier aerospace machine shop is what pays the bills currently.
I fancy myself as a plant manager or operations manager with electroplating experience and manufacturing engineer training. Former owner of a bullet manufacturer in fife.

Also do consulting on ballistics projects for bullet designers around the country. Crew chief on a street stock race car (no pay) and do automotive work out of my garage. Paint, body, engines and performance enhancement.
The machine shop has been swamped as of late. We have quoted more work in the last four months than the previous twelve and po's just keep rolling in. One particular non-aerospace project will revolutionize torque transfer and speed control of electric motors. The finest product I've ever seen.

A college course taught me that 90% of the jobs in the private sector are filled before they are advertised because of networking. Now that I know that there are some mechanical folks on the board I have another resource when we need a new employee or two. Or perhaps I will find a new career with one of you folks.
