Good spinning reel for floats??? - 07/04/02 08:23 AM

Everything in me says I should have bought the Shimano 2000 or 4000 to round out my float rod setup. I have the GL2 10' STR1201S and .........a Diawa 2000. Yes, I bought a Diawa. Line capacity was right as was the wieght and for $39 can I go wrong? Any input on this would be appreicated. If I really messed up please say so while I can still undo this.

I'm not familiar with the Diawa brand but it could surprise you. I had a quantum spinning reel that worked great for many years. I finally retired it when the drag starting getting too rough. Now I use Shimano Symetre and they are nice reels. You picked a good float rod and should be happy with it.

I am not sure what series Diawa you bought, but I am familiar with the size . The new Diawa's are awesome reels . The 2000 size though in my opinion is just a tad on the small side , especially considering that you are fishing it on the longer 1201 .

If you are fishing no larger than 8# line the capacity on the 2000 is fine . If not , you should consider the 2500 size .

As far as the series of Diawa that you are fishing , if it is any of the new ones , which it sounds like it is , they are great reels .

I have been fishing the Regal X and have been very impressed with with it's performance

Shimano has a new reel out called the spheros 3000, it is right between the 2000 and 4000. I bought one and love it!! Alot!! of nice features on it too!!

(Teds) has em.(mike talked me into one) glad he did!

Also have a metaloid md 30, it also is a good one, I love it but is a bit heavier than I thought!!

Check out the spheros!!

I have been fishing the regal x and z for years and love them! The only weak spot I have found is the bail spring, order some xtras and I think you will be in good shape.

I also like the Shimano Symetre's for my float rods, 4000 series on the winter runs rods and 2000 series on the summer run rods. The Sahara is also a good reel.

For the money check out the Okuma Epix-30,10bb's for under 50 bucks and the best drag system I've found yet in a spinning reel.........Os

The Epix (now Epixor's) are very smooth and great looking reels . I have two of them and no longer use them because both spools came apart .

They look like one piece spools but if you take the drag knob off you will see four small screws that hold the top half of the spool on . This is where both of my spools broke . The screws apparently stripped out and will no longer hold the spools together.

This forced me to get new Diawa's and the one other great thing about them is that they have a larger diameter spool so they can cast much further than the other reels of the same size .
