need help buying a new boat... - 07/24/02 06:13 PM

I am looking at buying a new boat for the first time in many years. I would like to know how much dealing I can expect to do on a new boat with a dealer (I've bought from private parties but never from a dealer). Do the sticker prices stand pretty solid or is it more like car buying where the sticker is more of a dream price?
Any help and your experiences would be helpful. I am looking at 17 to 19 aluminum multi use boats with an outboard prop (hewescraft sportsman, tuff boat rw, etc..) if it makes a difference. Wouldn't mind a used boat but they are tough to come by.

Thanks

I've found Smokercraft to be a very, VERY reliable boat. A friend has a 14 footer and we've taken to the sound with no problems, as well as lakes. I'm sure it would work in some rivers, although i dont plan to try it

How about some parameters to give us an idea of what you are looking for.

Size, use in salt or fresh water, how much money you want to spend, how many people fishing, aluminum or fiberglass, kind of motor (pump or prop), and is your tow vehicle adequate.

A friend of mine just purchased a new North River sled. The dealer wouldn't dicker with the base price, but made some leeway on the options. The options are where he saved his money. Wouldn't know about the others though.

Bad
Now is a pretty good time to start looking for what you want in a boat. By the time you figure it out, there should be plenty of "end of the season" bargains to be had. North River is my choice, but there are plenty of other good boats to choose from. Good Luck.

Talk to the guys at 3 Rivers Marine...425-415-1575 I do believe, ask for Bryan. They are buy far the best guys in the area...especially when it comes to aluminum as they an Alumaweld dealer.

They are super freindly and knowledge guys and would be more then willing to give you some options without pressure sales.

Plus they have a ton of used boats as well.

I'd second the comments about Three River's Marine. Good boats, good people and good pricing. I bought a 19' Stryker Sport jet a few months ago and they were great to work with. The boat is super well built and the trailers they inlcude are the best I've seen.

I would figure out exactly what you what and go straight to the Willie factory.... the base price wont change, but you get to design the exact boat you want!
Mike is so good to work, he asks the right questions... and will answer all your questions.
Give him a shot! You'll be surprised at the price.

Also look at the used boats he has on the webpage... lots of great deals..

Ive taken some classes on negotiating as it pertains to my job. There are a few tactics that you might want to consider.

1) Be patient, dont expect to get that shiney new boat on your first visit.

2) Let them know you are considering other Boats.

3) Have the dealer take you on a test drive.

4) Negotiate options into the price.

The more time a sales rep has invested in you the better. They have goals to hit in sales and they will bend towards the end of the month.

After hours of there time and investment(Boat ride),
give them your price and tell them to call you when they can sell it for that price.
Be patient......they WILL call laugh

Good luck!
