Fish Weight Calculation ??? - 10/24/02 11:51 AM

Gang,

Wondering how accurate this formula is for weighing fish? My guess is +/- half a pound. Maybe one of our resident biologists can help out...

I had formerly used the same formula, but with the divisors being 775 for steelhead and 750 for salmon. Don't know if that is more or less accurate than the one you linked to, though.

Bob has a link here on the site to check too. The Steelhead / Salmon Weight Calculator

Using the info from your 10/20 post and that formula, that fish was 9.5 pounds. I was talking with DD last night, I thought it looked like an 8 or 9 pounder, didn't look over 10 unless you're over 300! JK!!!

The digital scales are pretty accurate and very humbling! A 15-20 pounder weighed on a digital scale is a really nice fish, and they LOOK bigger than they actually are. Usually by about 1/3 in my experience with estimating vs weighing. I've seen a lot of 15 pounders called 20, I've even done it, but when weighed the truth is humbling!

There is some disparity between the two links... confused Bob's is probably more accurate and I'll start using that one... However, being a "honest" fisherman laugh laugh , I might choose the other (laughing). (Did I tell you that there was a high lead reading in the stomach contents laugh laugh laugh laugh )

As far as my weight... I do have a nice beer gut for my 220# frame!!!

I don't know if I want to buy a digital scale now. I am humble. shocked shocked shocked

DR,
I think the one you linked to is real accurate. I have used it after weighting fish on my digital scale and they are always real close. You are real close at +/- a half pound.

I've tried using the formula's for my (mostly steelhead) fishing and have found they usually exagerate the size of the fish. I wound up taking all the measurements of my hatchery fish one season and writing them down. I still write down the measurements of the biggies. Now I can look back at comparisons to actual weighed fish to estimate the size of those I release (natives). I think a seasoned fisherman can eyeball fish more accurately than using the formulas.

My 2 cents.
