Corky and Yarn set up?

Corky and Yarn set up? - 11/01/02 05:49 PM

Hey all,
New to the gear scene and looking forward to locking horns with those Chumbie Wumbies this November.
My question however, is how do you attatch the yarn?
Do you tie it to the hook and snug it up in the egg loop, or do you tie it to the leader atop a bead?
Any help'd be much appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Larry

The easy way is to put a small tuff in the egg loop and pull tight or you can take a small peice of line and run it through the top of the corkie, make a loop and run it back up. Put the yarn in the loop and pull into the center of the corkie. Takes more time but keep the corkie in place and leave the egg loop open for egg.

I use a half hitch to fasten the yarn to the eggloop itself. You can then use the yarn to open the egg loop. smile

I've got an easier way. When making your hooks with the baitloop many fisherman like to use 15 to 20 wraps. That enables the hook to hold more bait. When throwing a corky/yarn setup, reduce your initial wraps to 6 or 7. Open the egg loop and put a piece of yarn about an inch long through. That leaves one half inch hanging from the knot on the hook. It stays on real well and you rarely have to tamper with it. But remember, keep your yarn well trimmed and don't let it hang any lower than the bottom of your hook. That way when the fish hits, he'll hit your hook and not just your yarn. I can't even count all of the guys I've seen throwing yarn that hung a full inch below their hook. They wonder why they don't hook fish. For one, their probably spooking the poor things. Secondly, if the fish bites, all it's getting is the yarn. Best of luck. This is the same setup I've used for years. Works great. THE LESS YARN THE BETTER!

It's funny, I have seen guys chucking huge pieces of yarn at those chums at Hoodsport.

I prefer to use the egg loop set up described above, but at times, I've just tied it above the hook, and then clipped it -- usually when the fishing is hot and I'm too lazy to tie an egg loop. Works fine, but the yarn doesn't stay in place all the time.

The big yarn has a definate purpose. When you're snagging fish, the big, 1-1/2" tag of yarn that hangs below the hook, helps to put the hook where you want it...... The yarn sucks down to the side of a fish like steel to a magnet..... Anyway, that may very well be why you guys are seeing the big yarn at Hoodsport and on the Skok and places like that.
