Egg skeins question

Egg skeins question - 12/10/02 10:56 AM

Went fishing last saturday and kept two big coho hens. They were just loaded with eggs. I took all four skeins and weighed them. A hair over 6 lbs for two fish. These have gotta be the biggest batch of eggs I have ever seen in a fish. What would be an average for the eggs you get out of a salmon or steelhead.

Hard to say, depends on the size of the fish and how far along they are. Sounds like you did pretty well. Nothing wrong with six pounds of tight eggs.

Ditto ... actual weight will depend upon the maturity of the eggs. Those 3 pounds were a few ounces perhaps 45-60 days ago. Most I've ever seen out of a fish? A little over 10 lbs. from a Kenai king. Silver eggs make fine steelhead offerings, good luck!
