Sweeper on the Hoh

Sweeper on the Hoh - 12/22/02 02:12 AM

Bob or someone who has been down the upper Hoh recently, Bob mentioned there is a sweeper to look out for. A little more information would make the hair on the back of my neck settle down a little ( the word sweeper always makes me a little nervous)
Can you see it coming eek ? gotta get out of the boat? approximate location?

Any more info would be appreciated, keeps me from watching down river all day, makes it a bit more relaxing.

Thanks in advance for any info smile

Anyone that would post about a "sweeper" and then not inform as to the general area of that "sweeper" is either kidding or just doesn't care about the safety of others.....

but then maybe its just to scare others off the river, so more room for themselves!!!! Sure could be????

Hey DrifterWA
You obviously don't know Bob! He would never deliberately put a dangerous situation
on this board for kicks. And to keep people off the river. He is probably on the river right now and was also working hard on this board last night to get it revised.
He provides this board FREE for your enjoyment. If you can't respect that, take it elsewhere! slap

Wonder what part of "upper river " is not understood? How about just after the 7,368,946 th rock!

There was/is a nasty logjam and sweeper on the Upper Hoh right where the river breaks away from the road just a few hundred yards downstream of the Parkline.

Easy to spot...and very easy to walk your boat through!

...I am sure though Bob will be able provide with better details or may know of another jam/sweeper.

Its the one by the log jam....

Near where that alder pokes out...

Just above where we caught that fish last year...

By the big rock...

Funny, that's perhaps the first time in the last six years I've been accused of "scaring people off the river" rolleyes

It is in the upper end as I posted. The channel you're referring to Ryan no longer exists, the small channel that went to the left there is now the main channel of the river and the sweeper is located just below that ... for the rest of you, about 1/2 mile into the Park Line float. You could get around it at extreme high water ... but at nomral flows, I don't know if it's possible, and don't guess that you might get around it going left, you won't!

Unless the high water option hangs in there at normal flows ... you gotta make sure you bail out and then you'll probably have to drag your boat.

Thanks Bob and others who added some info. Never thought for a second you were holding out any info. I have always found people on this BB to be very safety minded, I'm sure that is why it was brought up to begin with. I'm just one of those guys who needs a little more detail. I went bottom up about 15 years ago and it has left a lasting impression. Always been a little embarassed about that episode, but not to embarrassed to ask a question about something that might put me or my passengers at risk.

Thanks guys thumbs

Bob:

Am sorry, did not see the orginal post. If the upper river was mentioned that would be good enough for me.

Enjoy this forum and have for a few years, sure don't mean to piss off anyone.

Merry Christmas, all, Happy New Year....may your "snags be few, your knots never break and your fish all enjoyable to catch"

Sparkette is f### with ya laugh made me giggle!!

A sweeper is a log laying across the river blocking the passage of your boat sled pontoon whatever.Get a boat up sidways and you can very easily flip her.

Re: Sweeper on the Hoh - 12/24/02 06:38 PM

Supposed to be working Thursday ... but looking at rainfall forecasts for tomorrow, I don't think either of us will be and Ma Nature might take of it herself frown

That's 4.2 inches in 24 hours ... YIKES! Spossed to be a cold rain though, so hopefully it won't be really really ugly!

If it doesn't pour enough to move it, bring one with a big bar, 'cuz my 029 and 20" bar might make a dent in the root and that's about it wink

But we will of course talk to WDFW about getting an emergency permit to remove it first laugh

Is this thing still around?

...or was Nature able to take care of it?

Re: Sweeper on the Hoh - 12/30/02 11:34 PM

I'll try to take a peek up that way the next few days to see what happened to it smile
