Money spent on fishing.

I just read a Washington Dept of Fish & Wildlife news release dated 19 Dec. It states that sportfishers spent $854 MILLION in 2001. I know that a chunk of that was from me. The interesting part of the article was the statement:

"While WDFW's first responsibility is to conserve the state's fish and wildlife resources, state law also directs the department to maximize recreational fishing and hunting opportunities for state citizens.

Koenings said the report underscores the need to not only maintain but expand predictable fish and wildlife-associated activities consistent with sound, scientifically- based resource management.

One of the department's most important jobs in the years ahead will be to work even more closely with civic leaders, business groups and citizens to find ways to increase fishing, hunting and wildlife-viewing opportunities, he said. "

I'm not sure if the mandate to provide oppertunity to fish has anything to do with fish available to be caught.

Deepwater

I think the new director is really trying to do a good job and is succeeding in alot of areas. The WDFW is still populated with the good old boys who allowed our fisheries to be depleted for the sake of their commercial fishing buddies in the last 30 years. Escapement goals were rarely met for decades. Today Governor Locke's appointees on the WDFW commission seem to still favor commercial fishing when they can get away with the favoritism. So don't sit back with your fishing rod thinking that just because we sportsmen and women spent so much money the WDFW is going to set things up to benefit us over the other user groups. NO..We have to continue to fight for what we want.

I know I have spent my fair share of money.
