Coyote Spoon - 12/26/02 08:33 PM

I would use a glow green flasher with coyote spoon ( Glow green) for blackmouth..but a guy told me that coyote spoon is active so don't need a flasher... I am confused..How length of leader is coyote spoon behind a flasher ? same length leader for all kind salmon ? What is you preferred leader length for the coyote spoon ? Test lbs leader ? Thanks for helping..

I have not tried a Coyote without a flasher. When I do run a Coyote/flasher set up I use 20# leader at 24 inches.

Using a 24 inch leader goes against common fishing knowledge, so be prepared to be laughed at until you catch the most fish. thumbs

I love using a coyote spoon by itself especially when the fish seem to have developed a picky attitude. I have used 15# line and 4' of leader sometimes longer. Experiment with it you might be surprised. thumbs

There is no set length or Rule of Thumb that I know of for spoons. Everyone has their own liking for length behind the flasher. My preference is 42" for Blackmouth- measured from the end of the flasher to the end of the spoon. Larger spoons (5-6 inches) I'll move it out to 50". I rarely use the 'yote anymore because it doesn't glow bright enough for me.. I like the Silver Horde spoons. But that 'yote it is one deadly spoon. My leader choice for spoons is 20# Maxima- nothing else!

next time out for blackmouth try this, run one side with flasher/? and run coyoyte on other side without. one flasher behind boat is plenty to draw in fish. this also works with coho killers and other spoons. you will think im crazy but i caught silvers on chartruse spinnerbait with trailer hooks b4 no flasher. fishing was so good one day i got a little crazy and tried it. it worked alright and did this year too when times where slower. i havnt tried for blackmouth b4 but will this yr. I think the chrome side on the coyote's attract as much or more than the colored side. I've been using the copcar myself with some success for both blackmouth and chinook. As far as the glo-type spoons, haven't done as well. Tried a sonic edge glo next to the coyote and the coyote outfished it. I also don't like how the glow spoons tend to get mold growth, unless they're thoroughly cleaned and kept dry. The smooth coyote's just wipe off. I did put the coyote on the bottom and the sonic edge suspended a bit more.

I've been using one glow hotspot and one metal glow spatter-back flasher. I usually use the metal flasher with a green glow hootchie with a twinkle skirt and a hotspot with a coyote. My theory is that the coho and chinook love the baited hootchies, but blackmouth prefer the spoons. All my leaders are 40-50 lbs, 42" for spoons and 27-36" for hootchies.

The Coyote is my go to spoon for summer kings or blackmouth in shallower water, but as deep as I have been fishing lately the Coho Killer has been working a lot better. Deep means luminous and Silver Horde spoons are just a lot brighter, although I'm working on remedying that on some Coyotes with some new paint I got for Xmas <img border="0" alt="[santa]" title="" src="graemlins/santa.gif" />

I always take good care of the finish on my spoons, but keeping a little smelly jelly on them does seem to preserve the paint a little better. I rinse them, dry them off, grease them a little, and keep them in plastic bags in my tackle box.

I always use a Hotspot with a spoon, and I like a little longer leader on the Coyote for summer kings - 5 feet even. For blackmouth 42" is better. And I like a stiff leader as it transmits more action to the spoon - 40 pound Berkley Big Game is about right.

You will find that everyone does it differently confused

DEA,

In the neighborhood of 8-15 feet should do off your release.

If you are running two downriggers place it 10 feet or so further than the "flasher" side. When a bait ball shows on the fish finder, drop the boat into neutral until the ball hits bottom and then kick the engine into gear. By the time the ball (weight) hits, your spoon should be right on the outside of the bait ball and dropping like a crippled herring- smack!

If you are running a flasher off the ball, 3-6 feet past the distance of the flasher.

I fish 'Yotes in water less maybe 80' and on a good bright day (that deep)(..and rarely these days). Pass 80', Double Glo all the way- Sonic Edges, Kingfishers, or Coho Killer. Not to mention that I modify the Sonic Edge's action. I have a tremendous amount of confidence in that spoon now.

Recently, I have been experimenting the super glow paints on my flashers and have been doing good. Those flasher glow bright in or out of the water for hours!!!!

beer i have been running fixed flasher off the downrigger ball, then clip in to the DR line about 3 ft above the ball and back about 10-12ft for my spoon of the day. flasher is about 6ft behind the DR ball, no flasher for the fish to drag around. also use fishflashs off the ball.
