Honestly, I was kinda expecting her to shoot him in the chest with a shotgun.

We'll have to work on that.

Rule # 1. Always bring a gun to a gun fight.

now you're just discriminating against stalkers. I say, once you go stalker, all bets are off. wink

Re: A Parker-Dogfish production - 03/25/09 05:30 PM

Aunty

i'd be more inclined to argue that it's your humanity that makes you equal not your current state of preparedness for armed conflict.

In fact I might also argue that the instinct to face fear with violence instead of reason is keeping the human race from evolving.

EDIT to add: Dammit, who goofed up the avatar background color? I smell a conspiracy.

Re: A Parker-Dogfish production - 03/25/09 08:31 PM

"There is no equality as long as men victimize the weaker sex and women are defenseless."

my quote would be very similar....

"There is no equality as long as the strong victimize the weak"

Furthermore, if the goal is merely a level playing field, total disarmament accomplishes the exact same thing.

In your scenario, the problem is solved with the killing of the rapist.

....very old testament....

i would argue that my scenario is the more human one...

...very new testament...

....and the only one of the two that leaves the door open for the over-arching problem to be solved, which is male on female violence (ultimately, human on human violence but for the sake of this conversation we'll keep it compartmentalized).

Carrying a gun in your purse no more reduces your risk of being raped than does carrying a gun in your vest to prevent being attacked by a cougar. When a cougar attacks you, you've been stalked. The numbers say that if you were to be raped it would overwhelmingly most likely be by someone you know....someone who knows your habits, probably knows you own a gun, knows where you are carrying it, knowws where you are vulnerable (away from your purse for example??), knows your husbands duty schedule etc, etc, etc....you would then also have been stalked by a predator.

The appropriate response to fear is vigilance, not violence.

I would argue that vigilance is the human response. An escalation of violence is the more animalistic response.

Re: A Parker-Dogfish production - 03/25/09 10:18 PM

I say that same non-victim self-confidence is achievable without a gun.

If toting a gun is what it takes for you to feel in control of your fear of being raped, more power to you.

The end is merely the end. Everything else is subjective.

Re: A Parker-Dogfish production - 03/26/09 12:26 AM

I'm coming from a place where I'm convinced that most of humanity IS still enslaved, both by fear and debt. Some slaves just happen to own guns.

Lack of fear does not equal meekness or acquiescence.

Re: A Parker-Dogfish production - 03/26/09 02:49 AM

I take exception to this quote by Marsha.

"There is no equality as long as men victimize the weaker sex and women are defenseless."

To see the way men are constantly raped by the system when it comes to divorce, and how men are victimized by the court as to custody, and child support, I'd say that until women want to step up and wish to really become equal, they will remain the weaker sex. Stop demanding special treatment because of your sex. (Marsha I know you don't demand special treatment, but others of your sex certainly do, and they drag you down with them.) It is similar to demanding special treatment because of race.

On the other issue, I have no issue raising the level of violence to a state that would be seen as abhorent by 99% of humanity, should I or my family, ever be attacked again.

H2O is correct about vigilence to a certain extent, but in an attempt to disarm the populace, history has proven that while the law abiding citizen dutifully turn in their weapons, the criminals don't. That is why they are criminals. It is nice to think ideally, but hwen applied to the real world, all ideal scenarios fail.

Victim once, but never again.

Re: A Parker-Dogfish production - 03/26/09 10:05 AM

he stopped the rampage with his spine (of course the duality here is intentional), not his gun.

any unarmed hero could have done the same thing. If having that extra confidence to do something is what made him take action, its also what got him shot.

we could make google points all day but that doesn't really sound appealing, nor would it accomplish much.

This is probably where we should agree to disagree and find some hapless elvis type to go pillory.

Ok I am 6'1 300+ and I don't carry and hope I never will although I own a decent arsenal. But if my daughter wanted to go to college in Detroit she would have the choice of any handgun she might want. Until I felt confident that everyone felt the way h20 thinks you wouldn't change my mind.
