reel lube?

I have always rinsed and WD-40'd my reels.....just soaked them and let them drain/dry. Makes them a little messy first thing, but a wipe down or two and things are good again. Have been doing this for many years, but perhaps there is a better way. What do you do/use?

Quick and effective gets high points......I'm lazy.
