Interesting historical note, the phrase "under God" was added to the pledge in the 1950s McCarthy era. I guess the point was to exclude any Godless communists that were hiding under McCarthy's bed, and not to deliberately mix church and state. Uh-oh.

No Salmo, in the 50's and 60's the whole country was more conservative than it is now. Even Kennedy believed in God. My folks were life long liberals and also church going Catholics. All this I don't believe in God stuff came latter.
By the way" separation of church and state" doesn't mean you are never going to see or hear the word God.
