Wash down pump units

Wash down pump units - 01/01/03 10:50 AM

I've got a wash down pump unit on my sled that's only about a year old. It's worked great up to the other day. Wondering if anyone on the board has some experience with them?
The motor hums right along just like it always has when I flick the switch but no water comes out of the hose. I've checked the water intake and filter and there doesn't seem to be any problem there, water is coming in just fine when that section is apart. I've taken the hose and nozzle off so I know I don't have any problem on that end either. Yesterday I took the bottom five or six screws out of the pump thinking maybe I got some thing stuck in it but everything looked fine. I'm sort of stuck now. Has anybody had similar problems and figured out what's wrong? I need to get it fixed soon, starting to get a real dirty boat! Thanks for any help!!!

Fish, if your boat is a year old and the pump came with the boat, I'd say its probably history, I've run 3 new boats that came from the factory with pumps, I think they put in the cheapest pumps they could find as none of them lasted 1 season. I've had much better results from after-market pumps. If this is an after-market pumps, I don't know what to tell you, sorry.

The unit I have is a Shurflo Pump, same one as Cabala's sells for 85 bucks. I did get it with my boat when I bought it new and I don't know if Alumaweld put it in at the factory or if Three Rivers did. It looks like a pretty well made unit though. I'm thinking it has to be some thing inside of the pump like a seal or something? As I said, the motor turns on just like it always has just no water comes out of the hose, frown

Go to Shurflo on the webb (google)

If you follow dn strm you,ll com to trbl shooting etc.

I checked mine one time and found impellor spinning on shaft. Jury rigged and its still working.

Hope you get some good from this.

Rob-

If the pump is making a continous hum then try
checking the connections between the hose and the pump unit and also the connection between the hose and the spray nozzle. Most likely something is cross threaded or loose. It is not letting the sealed pump unit build up the pressure. If the sound hums then stops, I think it is probably inside the pump?

Good luck

One other thing to check, make sure the impeller is not slipping on the shaft?

FB,

I had the same problem with a sure flo pump,
but I think any pump would do the same thing.
Check for air leaks on the intake side of the pump, better yet replace that hose with a new one and new clamps. Worked for me, good luck.

Got it fixed!!! smile Just for the record and if any one in the future has a similar problem. As it turns out I must have sucked some dirt into it at the boat launch when I was cleaning the boat out at the end of the day. I ended up taking the whole bottom unit off, cleaned it all up and put it back together. When I took the lower unit apart from the motor it had a fair amount of dirty water in it. I guess with the debris inside the pump the seals couldn't get a good seal. Anyway, cleaned it up and seems to work just fine. Thanks everybody for help and suggestions!!!
