Line twist HELP!!!

What actuallly causes line twist. I have a reel that if you have any slack in it is acts like an acordian. Kind of impossible to cast when it twists all up.

Is this caused by the way I put the line on the reel?
Is is true that there is a certain direction you want you line to come off the spool to prevent this?
Or am I just misfortunate.

Really annoying. Please help. Thinking about just putting new line on but want to know the answer to the second part about the spool before I do it.

For spinning reels just lay the spool of new line on he floor, on it's side, so the line comes off just like it's going on your reel.

You can do all the rest of the BS….or

You can do this; just wind the line onto your spool first of a new spool (it works the same if you already have line on the spool). Then tie off your line to something that you can walk a way from for about 80-100 yards. When you get to that point, stop and set your rod down along something. Go back to the point where you tied off your line. Cut the line at that point. Go back and pick up your rod and start winding up your line. Make sure you keep tension on your line with your fingers until you have winded up your line. It will unwind any twisting in the line!

This will solve your problem until it gets twisted again. Then you just do it all over again. You will hear ALL KINDS OF OTHER BS TRICKS, but this will work every time!

Also if when reeling in and the line is not coming in and you keep reeling anyway it will make the durndest mess you ever saw. When this happens to people I have out with me I cut off their luer and let the line out behind the boat and pull it for a while to straighten it and then reel it in holding tension on it ahead of the reel. The best advise is to buy a levelwind baitcaster and master them. Not too hard to do if someone shows you the few little tricks to adjusting the reels. Lyle

Due to the fact I have a large field next to my place I am going to tie it to a fence and run with it. Then reel it back up as Cowlitzfisherman says. Seems like a cost effective way for me since both my reels were just respooled a month or two ago. Only one has problems but I am going to do both while I am out.

If it doesn't work then phase 2. Respool.

You can waste half the day playing in the field like Cowlitz says or do what I mentioned and be done in a few minutes. Works every time and is not a BS trick, just common sense. This is not rocket science, just a respooll job.

How about just tie a chain swivel at the other end, raise your rod, and then reel in as you walk.

Why risk a chance of your line being damaged by sharp objects from dragging it on the ground?

lay the spoool on its side one way only and you'll still get line twist... diameter of the spools are different. unless you're not using maxima... If not why bother....

Tie the line on the reel... set spool flat... 10-20 cranks one side... flip spool over 10-20 cranks... check once and a while to make sure its not twisting.... after you finish soak the spool in water (hot if you wish, dont know if it matters) to impart memory of the reel spool so it doesn't shoot of the reel in the morning...

Hell you can spool up friggin 15# chameleon on a shimano 500 with no problemss....

How much line are you putting on the reel? If you put too much line on it will tend to jump off the spool as well.

Switch to braid,no line twist.

if you're on a river you can just open the bail and let a bunch of line float down the river then reel it back up with some tension on the line from your fingers....cut you terminal rigging off first of course...i do this when i fish spinners 'cause i don't like using swivels....

It's not twisting off the spool. It is when there is slack at the end of the line it twists like mad.

I had all the line twist out using Cowlitzfishermans way. Went to the river this morning and 30 casts later, LINE TWIST.

Must be the way I am rigging or something. Who knows hella frustrating. Happens when fishing corkey and yarn. How do you rig it on your line? I use a snaggless weight on the line first, barrel swivel then leader. Am I wrong?

I forgot to tell you the most important part about getting the twist out of you line! I must be loosing it! The part that I forgot to tell you to do was after you walk out your line that you had tied off, you need to point you rod straight at you line (don't bend your rod) and hold your spool tight. Then take a few steps backwards until you think that your line is just about ready to break. Hold it like that for about 25-30 seconds. This will take all the twist memory out. Then walk forward until you can get your line to go slack and then do like I said. Walk back and cut your, and then rewind it like I had said to do earlier.

I don't know how I missed telling you that the first time! This time it WILL WORK! Let me know if it doesn't

might try switching to a better line -- the limp-er the better for spinning reels. Also, don't overfill the spool and, as was mentioned earlier, NEVER! reel when the drag is workin!!!!!!

Final thought, try inserting a swivel or two sumwhere in yer setup, I prefer the black ones (crane?), smallest you can get away with. If that doesn't work and you can afford it -- use ball bearing swivels.

I used to have the line twist problem when moochin but added a ball bearing swivel in the middle of my leader and another just up from the weight and that eliminated most of the line twist.

IMHO, the only way to spool line onto a spinning reel is to place the spool with a pencil through it, and then let it free wheel while you wind the line on the reel with tension from your fingers. This stores the line with a small twist in it. The twist will come out with each cast, and be stored with the twist on retrieval. This is what you want, untwisted line out of the rod.

If the line is twisted and acting squirrely on the reel, either let it drift down stream without any hardware on it, or troll it behind a boat. That will get the twist out of perfectly.

Line twist can get in from lures that spin, or from bad installation. If you have it, don't get stressed about it, just get it out.
