I think as long as you do a good job curing them all species of eggs will work. Chinook eggs seem to work a little better overall for chinook than silver or steelhead eggs but I've done perfectly fine on the others. I usually prefer to use silver and chinook eggs for springers, fall chinook, and silvers and my winter steelhead eggs for steelhead.

This may be different for you guys, but one of the biggest factors I keep in mind here when choosing what type of eggs to use is what kind of eggs are being used the most. Here it is either king eggs or brown eggs and then steelhead eggs, something with a bit of a different scent can trigger the fish. Especially in spring just about everybody uses brown eggs they are considered "gold" here, there are times when King or silver eggs will be the top producer even though they have already been dead for months. So if everybody is throwing king eggs it may be worth it to try a different kind, etc...

I use pink salmon, coho, chinook, chum and steelhead eggs. They all have worked well for me. I like to use the tightest skanes because they hold up better and having a good cure is a must.

Sockeye will mill around in a fresh water lake for at least a couple of months (if not more), before heading up to spawn.
Usually, the times when you can catch sockeye, their eggs are way too immature to use. I've never caught a sockeye that had a skein large enough to cure.

I don't do the chum or pink thing either Parker. Yes,the egg's in the sockeye during the season when open are a little to small for my liking. But if you can get some good mature egg's from a sockeye they would make great bait as the color is pretty much already there.Just need to cure.Good luck, STRIKE ZONE

I'm definately not an egg expert, but I did cure up skeins from a couple of ripe Baker River Sockeye last year. They worked just fine for Silvers in the Snohomo & Skagit.

I too agree with Parker, I cure up all the eggs I harvest from my fish through the year, they all seem to work if cured the right way! I don't use the Pink or Chum eggs though, and I don't keep those nasty lil things either! There eggs are also more oval than round if u take a good look at them anyway! I too have also never seen any sockeye that I've caught have mature eggs, so never used them, so don't have anything to say about them either! Fish On, Chris
