Cell Phone Do Not Call List - 12/14/04 01:58 PM

This from a friend ...

As of January 1, 2005, all cell phone numbers will be made public to
telemarketing firms. According to the national do not call list, you have
until December 15th, 2004 to get on the national do not call list for your
cell phones.

You can call 1-888-382-1222 or go to

http://www.donotcall.gov

Once you register, it is in effect for 5 years.

Does someone from the industry know if this is real or not? It smells like a phishing scam to get our numbers to me.

Still not sure. I went and found the FCC site and when you follow the link to register, it does take you to the site I listed above.

I couldn't find anything about the deadline for cell phones. Oh well. If it is a scam, they didn't get much. Not nearly what they'll get if they call me.

Re: Cell Phone Do Not Call List - 12/14/04 04:50 PM

I work in the industry, and beleive me, they would never be able to pass this, primarily because people have to pay for their own incoming calls.

The claim of having your cellular number listed out to telemarketers is just BS.
However, the Do Not Call registry is real ( http://donotcall.gov) and I recommend each of you put your cellular and landline phone numbers on it to avoid calls from Telemarketers.

All carriers are working with a contracted company to create a directory of wireless numbers, called 411. But this is an Opt-in service for people who use their cellular as their business line.

Our IT guy forwarded the number through our company. The phone number and web site listed are the same that was passed on to us. The phone call took about a minute.

Re: Cell Phone Do Not Call List - 12/14/04 08:49 PM

I work in the industry. This list is for real. There are several telecom providers who have formed a "Consortium" to gather and build a 411 "Information Directory" for cell phones.

**HOWEVER** As others have stated here, this is an OPT-IN list at this time, although the Service Providers that are part of the "Consortium" building this list are indeed giving up your phone numbers. You cannot be called from this list until you "OPT-IN". I'm proud to say the company I work for is not part of the "Consortium" that would entertain the idea of giving up it's customers information. Choose your service provider wisely. They can be your best friend, or you worst enemy. Just think about how little time will pass before this Database is compromised by some hacker. Arrgghhh!
