EZ Thread Yarn Balls

EZ Thread Yarn Balls - 11/05/11 08:11 PM

EZ Thread Yarn Balls

Yarn balls tied on a tube that require no threading tool and let you choose your preferred hook and leader combination.

Sizes vary slightly, most are penny sized with some being a bit smaller and some larger for variable water conditions.

$7 per dozen, happy to mix and match and/or take custom orders if you don’t see your favorite here.

Rigging: First, find the tube.

Second, poke your line through it. Toss the tube (ala pre-tied bobber stops) and tie off. Pretty easy. I like mine pegged above the hook a little ways, but it all works.

Chart and Orange

Pink and White

Sherbert

Shrimp Cocktail

Cerise and White

Chart and Salmon Egg

Ok... totally fubared a couple names. Blame it on the wife... she mixed the last round for me. Got'em straightened out now!

Seriously, you should just rename this post listing as, "ColeyG's Money Balls!"... you'd probably attract more attention.

Have you ever attempted making a yarnball roughly the size of a golfball? I would love to try some that size this summer on the Kenai, Nushugak, and Togiak. If you have any interest in trying it I would love to give them a whirl.

Re: EZ Thread Yarn Balls - 01/15/12 02:15 AM

Shouldn't be a problem, I would just use 12-15 strands of glo bug yarn instead of 6.

What colors and how many smile

Re: EZ Thread Yarn Balls - 01/18/12 12:34 PM

An egg veil is any sort of fine, white material used to imitate leftover skein on an egg pattern.

There are a variety of different ways to do it, but this is one product that is commonly used.

http://www.caddisflyshop.com/egg-veil.html

Since I was never able to find this particular product at my local fly shops, I have tried some different things. One that I have had similar success with is White Glo Bug yarn. I pull it apart until it is fine enough to lightly cover the egg pattern.

I have quite a few of most varieties on hand and will be moving into production mode for the coming winter here before too long. Hit me up between now and the end of Sep if you are in a hurry, otherwise the middle of Oct will be my next chance to get them on the way.

It is that time of year again. Snowflakes are flying in the great white north, my fishing gear is tucked away for the foreseeable future, and I have already been spending way too much time at the tying table.

With steelhead season just around the corner for most of the PNW, now is a great time to stock up on EZ Thread Yarnballs.

Same details as in the past re: cost, qty's etc. Post up a recent photo or two of yarn fed fish and I'll toss in a free mixed dozen with your next order.

Re: EZ Thread Yarn Balls - 11/04/13 11:47 PM

I'm very interested. What is the advantage of pegging above the hook? I've never fished yarns balls before and have some new water I'm targetting this winter.
Posted by: ColeyG

Re: EZ Thread Yarn Balls - 11/05/13 01:34 AM

Pegging. There has been much discussion on the topic (see hang back rigging) in a number of different contexts though conceptually the principles are the same.

Separating your bait or lure and the hook greatly reduce the chances of the fish taking a hook deep. Using the hangback method, the fish takes your offering and the hook gets them, more often than not, on the outside of the mouth, or rather from the outside in. In other words, it's better for the fish and I think that is the most important of the reasons. Some of the rest are debatable.

I do actually think that my hooked to landed ratio is just as good if not better using this rigging as opposed to having the yarnie or similar small offering sitting directly on the hook. Small as something like a yarnball may be, I still think that even a yarnie buffers the hooks ability gain maximum purchase by either blocking some of the gap, or creating some turbulence just as the hook is trying to seal the deal. With some space between lure and hook, there is nothing to prevent the hook from doing it's job as best it can.

Another reason. I like my yarnies, corkies, beads, whatever to be free sliding on the leader. I have it in my head that this can lead to some slightly more "natural" action in the water with the lure having a little more room to move as compared to it being fixed in place. Whether or not there is any truth to this idea or not I can't say for sure, but if it ain't broke...

I am sure others (Doc!) can illustrate the finer points of hanging it back much more eloquently than I can.

Re: EZ Thread Yarn Balls - 11/06/13 02:16 AM

Gami finesse wide gaps have been my go to as of late. Size depends on the quarry. The lighter wire is awesome as it doesn't weigh the lighter offerings down too much and they are super sticky. I haven't bent any out yet that I can recall and have landed some bigger fish on them now.

There's no secret to using yarn balls, other than that you have to double stack 'em grin

Oh no.

Apparently you missed the "updates" thread last year.

Wait, disregard, you are one of the two approved double stackers. Forgot my own rules there for a second.

Here's 3 odd balls that have worked well for me

"American Flag": Flame, pale blue and white bling

"Nuclear Chicken": Cerise, chartreuse and white bling

"Light Brite": Orange and cerise (a personal favorite for brats)

Nowadays anything with white gets the "bling".

Enjoy and tight lines,

American flag. Nice one. I'd fish it just for the novelty.

But it works too! wink

Blues and shades thereof are underrated for some reason, especially in pressured waters when all see are pink and orange variants. I like the lighter pale blue (Carolina blue) versus the harsher deep blue.

I've been known to toss a baby blue with pink dot as a Hail Mary from time to time. Every once a while something eats it.

Some feel blue is what makes the Jerry Garcia the legend that it is, but I think that's mostly superstition. Mostly.
