Pilgrimage - 05/14/01 04:22 PM
I've returned from my weekend pilgrimage and like Troutmaster had my apprentice try to show me up.
This trip turned out to be different from the last one where "leeches ruled". This time it seemed to be chronies and not the usual suspects.
The best one was a #14 green chronie with the body wrapped with superfloss and a crystal flash rib. I had two of these "swim off" on me and this fly was the one I caught my biggest fish on. I was fishing 9 feet deep in about 10 foot of water. Used a two fly rig with one called a #10 Black Sally as the top fly and the little green one a foot lower.
Oh, I fished a floating dragon nymph on a sinking line and had one trout want that fly so bad he (or she) swallowed it. Only had a 1/3rd of the fly sticking up from the fish's gullet. It's hard to sacrifice a fly that takes 30 minutes to tie, but it's better for the fish. Don't know how long it will take that hairball to disolve, hopefully the deerhair will loosen with a days soaking.
My apprentice is now out looking for his Chromie Master robe....
Leeches didn't get me any trout. This time it was damsel/dragon imitations and chronies.
Biggest fish was 25 inches.
