I'll be getting a rifle elk tag to hunt the Minam unit in NE Oregon this fall. Not familiar with this area. Have you hunted this unit? Can anyone suggest some good drainages/ridges to find the wily wapiti?
Thanks!

This unit is very large and as one might expect the elk move a lot depending on the weather etc. How do you plan to get into the unit? Most of it is wilderness so its either foot or saddle. Most of the unit is also very high in elevation so be prepared for cold weather. To the south China Hat out of the Moss Springs area has produced some nice bulls. To the north Green Meadows at the edge of the Eagle Cap has been a good producer. This unit is used by professional packers a lot. They scout it most of the time and have somewhat of an edge over the newbie. If you do not have a pack animal, you might try Big Canyon Rd. Go to the top and hike into the old Stanley Guard Station Tower. The east side of the ridge is above the old Reds Horse Ranch and there are always a few bulls in that area. Since you can get into the unit by car in this area expect other hunters. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good Luck!
