Malaga Cow Permit - 01/05/04 09:12 AM

OK guys, I need a little help here. I was drawn for a cow tag in the Malaga unit. The tag runs through the end of Jan. So far I have spent 6 long days hunting this area and have covered most of the public land possible. Not an easy task late last week when I was up to my waist in snow.

With the recent snow I really thought that they would show up or at least I'd see tracks but even those are hard to come by.

Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm not real familiar with that area, but my brother and I had tags for that area years ago, and we only hunted one or two days and gave up because there was too much snow and no sign of any elk around....I think if I had it to do over again I'd try to hunt as low as possible, on private property. Isn't a lot of that area private, with a lot of orchards? I think that late hunt is primarily a damage control hunt, and it's meant to target elk on private property, so it seems the private landowners would be more than willing to let you on their property, and hopefully even tell you where the elk are or aren't. I'd just start knocking on doors, either that or call a local biologist with the WDFW and see if they can get you in contact with landowners that have problems with elk.
