.410 slugs - 12/14/07 03:12 PM

I got a win. model 37 singleshot 410 yesterday with a built in full choke. I was wondering if it is possible to shoot rifled slugs through it? I have an 870 12 gauge but perfer keeping it the way it is as I do lots of duck & grouse hunting and shoot trap in the off season. thanks

Can't really use the slugs for much, so I'd think that you are better off sticking with birdshot. They are pretty much useless unless you are within about 15 yards. What would be your intended target?

The FPS and slug weight turn out having less terminal effectiveness than my .40 S&W. I'd rather use my .40 than a .410 slug.

Not legal for deer, as I believe I read 20 gauge minimum for deer, bear, cougar. 12 gauge minimum for elk.

Don't shoot slugs thru a full choke. Modified at the tightest, improved cylinder or cylinder is optimal. You risk splitting or at least bulging the choke (approx last 2 inches of Bbl). Steel shot is also not recommended in a full choke.
