You ever had some pull this.....

Well, just a short rant.
Up finishing the archery elk season this weekend and did pretty good. managed to fill some tags and a few freezers. Fun hunt and good friends as well but the weekend was slightly tainted but some B.S. move by a three dudes and a toyota.
My bro was hunting and dropped a cow right in her bed. Good stalk all by himself as we were hunting another mountain. Pretty exciting. He dumps her with a neck shot, punches his tag and starts to run back to call and get some help. On his way out about 200 yards from the elk he runs into these three dudes. They ask him how it is going so he B.S.'s them like any hunter would but they know he had one down as he was all bloody with missing arrows. Whatever...
So he runs out and gives us a call. At that point we start coming to help but it takes us about an hour to get there. We meet him and start back in for the elk. We get to the spot and guess what......No elk. Just guts and a bloody drag mark out to this road.
Who pulls that type of move. If you are a member......your lucky we did not catch you in the act. And you should likely sell your truck or change hunting area because we know what you drive. You dont want to meet up with any of our crew after that move. Just who does that. No class and if you learn to hunt....you could get your own elk.
Well besides that the hunting was good. We took care of my bro and he has half my elk but has anyone ever heard of that crap. I guess the bottom line is not to leave your animal but a steaming dead elk with a tag in her mouth most people would leave alone.

That is unreal! Not sure I would be able to comprehend that had just happened to me, if I was in that position.

Never happened to me but I have heard stories like this. My grandma told me a story once that one of her husbands at the time had a deer taken from him at gun point in south central washington. Growing up in Michigan, this is a common story and people have been shot over a deer.

I always have a fear of something like this happening and try my best not to let people know I have an animal down but sometimes you cant conceal what is obvious. Hopefuly theses guys were hungry and desperatley needed food to feed their families. But then some people are just mean spirited dicks and take things because its easy. Not real hunters in my book.

Up on the rattlesnake when i was a kid.Friend shot and came back down to fetch me and a couple horses.Same story when we got there.

I was just a kid and was left out of the rest of the story.Norris was an nfl lineman and he did not take kindly to someone stealing his families meat.Iguess he had a good idea that the offender was in an elk camp up the creek.I think he followed there horse tracks.Anyways he came back down the mountain with his elk.Knowing Norris as I did,I am glad it was not me that stole his elk.

That happened alot where I grew up.
"Two hunters, one deer" usually reads out as 'a misfortunate situation where the bullet passed through the animal and hit the hunter standing opposite." when the story makes the local paper Monday morning.

This "rare occurrence" happened every couple of years down that way. Funny thing though, what was the guy on the wrong side doing in the wide open 5 yards away from the dead deer?

We knockd 3 bulls down one time, as a group of us walked a small sage ridgeline back to our camp. A coyote was trotting down the oposite ridge, so as one guy shoots the yote, 3 bedded bulls jump in the draw bottom, and make easy pickings as they trot up across from us. Two big 5's, and a NICE 6. Well, we gut them, grab the hearts/livers, and head to camp for the rest of the crew.

Returned a few hours later, only one 5 pt remained, with a note stuck to its antler that said, "Thanks for the elk!!! " The guy who shot the 6pt drove around for the next 3 days checking camps, determined to find our elk...to no avail.

That sucks!!!

at the very least, pay a guy to go find your buddy while you stay with your game.

take down a license number and descriptions and dont be too shy about it.

Those guys go out to steal your game, its just another hub cap to them.

Whats the plan if you break an ankle or get shot by another hunter.

But I'm curious, how did the bad guys find the elk? Was it already on a road or out in the open or something?

I mean, I'm a good tracker but don't think I could randomly trip over someone's kill without them giving me a clue as to where it was shot...

Yeah, that was my first guess too when I read this. The late season this year with it open to vehicle access was a real cluster f^*k. Sorry to hear this, what a bunch of dirtbags.

yes it happened to me. Back in 1975, I had a college event delay my usual elk season with my dad & his buddies for unit 356. So I hunted the Colockum for 4 days near Coleman Creek instead, granted an invite from a Wenatchee relative.
There was 6" snow for the day. Prior to daylight, I walked up a ridge and found a spot that just said elk all over it. Decided from earlier observations with so many camps & hunters around to take a seat for a few hours. An older gentlemen came up to me about shooting time and said; "this is a good spot, my usual stand". We chatted and talked for at least a few minutes. I offered to leave but he said no, you were here first and he ambles up though the pines to "one of his other stands".

so over an hour goes by and 5 cows explode out of the timber, 100 yards away on the hill opposite my stand. A 4x5 bull comes out seconds later. My Win70 '06 is ready and fires. A solid hit but the bull keeps going. A 2nd shot is placed right behind the shoulder, the bull reacts by shuddering and stumbles over the ridge/hill line. I know he's mine. So I drop down into the ravine to cross over to opposite ridge. In the bottom of the ravine, I hear a rifle shot. Sounded close. I go up, cross over the hill line, blood everywhere heading down the hill. I go a few yards downhill and look down to see my 4x5 bull surrounded by 4 other hunters. One is tagging it. They get all defensive and separate a bit as I come walking down. The tagger exclaims: " this is my bull" I say; well your tag is on it, nothing I can or will do now". I notice my two shots are behind the shoulder and within 6 inches of each hole. His shot is placed in the head, perfectly below the bull's ear. I turn to leave and standing 30' above us is the older fella I chatted with earlier.

The elder fella says: " you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. That bull is this young mans. I jumped those elk, couldn't get a shot and tracked then down this ridge. At the top here, I followed his steps and the bulls blood in the snow. You also shot several minutes after his two shots. it took him at least that long to cross over through that hell hole of a ravine. Later tonight, around your campfire, I hope you are all proud."
With that he turned to leave.

I trudged off, dejected, headed downhill to my parked Scout.
although invited several times, I never hunted Colockum again.
This was the only elk season I didn't hunt my dads usual area. The next year, I converted to a 300 Win Mag w/200gr bullet. If the bull is running, the shot placement is now in the shoulder if possible, to break the bull down to the ground immediately. Had I listened to my dad's advice earlier, the Colockum bull would have been mine. His advice: "I always break the shoulder, running or standing". 17 WA bulls later, that advice has never failed me on a running bull since the Colockum experience. But my shot placement on a standing bull is still behind the shoulder in the pocket-boiler room.

It's a gut-wrencher every time I hear a story like that. First one I've heard from archery hunters, it usually happens during the gun hunts. It's that kind of ---- that made me quit rifle hunting for elk in Washington 20 years ago. Too few elk and too many idiots. Even in Idaho, I don't like to hunt closer than three miles to any road, which usually keeps away the lazy slobs and their four-wheelers.

Those ---holes like that ruin it for the rest of us, it's a miracle more hunters aren't shot by others in situations like these. How the hell could anyone look themselves in the mirror after pulling such a stunt?

Don't do anything stupid trying to retaliate, but it sure is tempting.

I had a bull taken 2 years ago while i was getting my pack board... really sucks...

had this happen to me 3 years ago up in packwood. killed a nice 5x5 bull and two dicks took it from me and my buddy. but all is good when we left them with my bull and walked by their truck about 300 yards from where they were my glock 22 found a target on all 4 of their tires.

I'm curious - did you call law enforcement? Not that they could or would do much other than take a report but you never know... stranger things have happened.
This has happened to my hunting party twice in the last 10 years in the Manashtash unit. The first time it happened to a friend on his first elk. 3rd day of the season he was hunting alone behind a gate. When he got to his truck with the liver & heart there were 4 guys in a red chevy that noticed that he had an elk down (blood, heart & liver gives it away). He BS'd with them for a few minutes before he left and came back to camp to get help. When we got back there, the drag marks were pretty clear in the trail and we knew what happened right away. After that happened, we always make notes of the license plates and descriptions of all vehicles we encounter. Never did find the douchebags but spent the rest of the week with our eyes open for them.

Last year, in the same spot, almost the same story but a different friend and this time we had thier license plate and a description of the vehicle. We called law enforcement. Turns out that they were locals. Later that evening LE found them with the spike hanging in thier carport skinned. Buddys tag was in the bed of thier truck. I'm not sure what the outcome was for the douchebags but i suspect nothing good.

Now I always keep a notepad of license plates and vehicle & person descriptions of everyone i encounter while hunting.
