My lab's appetite

My lab's appetite - 10/10/10 11:54 AM

Tye seems ravenous all the time. He often leaves some of his food, but he is always ready to eat anything else he can find, and his nose is always scanning the area for anything resembling food. Is that normal for a lab pup?

In my experiance with labs there is no such thing as normal and there is no "average" lab. I think each one believes in and celebrates their own uniqueness.

Had one that ate all the time, always ready for food. Had a couple that ate when they felt like it, even if food was out.

One climbed trees to get at the apples, another loves the peanuts and sunflower seed that is out there for the birds.

I think with pups, labs especially, you only need to worry when they don't want to eat .. .

I think labs are more food oriented than some other breeds. My old German shorthair and my bud's two Small Munsterlanders all can take it or leave it.

Olly (my lab pup) figured out how to knock off the lid to the feed bin, and after his stomach looked like a basketball inserted was the only time he ignored the food.

Labs being food oriented helps with training, seemingly.

Dave, Bella my 2yo female is the same, except she never leaves anything in her bowl. I don't think its atypical, Bella is high drive and 64lbs of eat and go, I say enjoy it.

Tyes dad Blue only eats when he is hungry, unless it is table scraps. I will feed him and he will eat half of his bowl, but the second dinner is ready he is under the table drooling like crazy. My yellow lab Sky is overweight, he will eat any food you put in his bowl, and anything that Blue doesnt eat.

Snit:

I heard grapes are bad for dogs, can’t say for sure.

Yeah Tye ate so many pears off the ground he had the shaits for three days. Also self serves blueberries, spinach and tomatoes.

Did you not see them eat as fat little 6 week old pups. Radar will eat anything he thinks is food just so nothing else will eat it before him.

My 21 week lab/chesapeake is the same way. Pretty much like a hoover vacuum at this age it seems. Also chews on EVERYTHING right now, that didn't start til recently. Smart as a whip though.

Re: My lab's appetite - 10/20/10 01:23 PM

Radar sucked down a 1/2 full gallon ziploc bag of vinison jerky in less than 10 min last night that I thought I had secured by putting in the center consul of my truck. he was real thirsty when we made it home...

Bristol, my chocolate would have also eaten the bag.

Labs seem like hungary dogs in general. I have a black and yellow, the yellow male Sage will suck up any crumb he can find and have no problem stealing a steak off the table. The black female Chinook is a little older and smarter and likes her food but would never eat anything not given to her.

Re: My lab's appetite - 10/20/10 02:56 PM

Boris eats all of his food at once, generally as quickly as possible. He generally seems content after his meal.

Kaiser ate all of his food at once, generally as quickly as possible, and did so in a sloppy, aggressive manner. After dinner, for about 30 minutes, he would obviously be on the hunt for more food anywhere he could find it.

Sounds like Tye is well within the normal range of things.

Boris has been had the run of the house for a few 1/2 days now and still hasn't destroyed anything. Kind of can't believe it but he is slowly earning my trust. Spent 3 hours collecting food bank food with me outside a grocery story yesterday and basically just laid on his blanket the whole time as dozens of people walked by. Still in awe of this little dog... although people keep telling me he isn't actually little.

Right about now is the destruction stage! Chase was almost perfect so I let him have run of the house at 6 mos. One night he ate my wallet and it's contents. The next night he took the Christmas tree down and chewed off all the lights and chewed up about half the tree.
A few weeks later all chewing behavior ceased. He is now a bit over 2 years old and I can leave him all day (dark to dark) and he won't do anything wrong.
Killer boat dog too. His only fault in the boat is a bit of whining when we cast floats since he wants to retrieve it. He is strange for a lab though and goes on and off the feed. Last lab once ate 20lb's of food after getting into the pantry. She was in obvious pain but looked very happy laying there with what looked like a basketball in her gut.
This is my third lab. They all have very different personalities.

I now have 2 - 11wk old Doberman "terrorist" pups on my hands. . . been awhile since I have had a pup, they always seem to be ravenous, looking for any food, or anything that will pass for food. ..

Been a fun drive from WI this week.
