Keeping the Guns in my safe rust free?

I wipe my guns down, let them dry out and rub them with Remoil wipes after hunting, but they still end up having a little bit of rust on them a week later. What can I do to combat this problem?

Put a Goldenrod safe dehumidifier in the safe.

I had the same problem... I found a product at Home Depot called Damp Rid... It looks like a clothes hanger with a plastic bag attached to it...
the top half has white and yellow beads in it, the lower half is empty...
it works like a Dri-z-air and the moisture collects in the lower half of the bag ... I was surprised as to how much water collected in it after only 2 weeks... the only draw back is it is scented and makes your safe smell kinda girly!!

You're also wiping off your oil when you rub them down.

I used to have the same problem, especially with my Brownings for some reason. Maybe their blueing sucks.

Try leaving on more oil and then wiping them off when you take them out to use.

As far as humidity goes the above suggestions are good.

Birchwood-Casey makes a rust preventative called Barricade that works really well. It used to be called Sheath. Should be with the gun cleaning supplies at the store.

thanks for the advice! I would like to put a goldenrod in my safe but I dont know where I would run the cord. The Dri Z Air method sounds promising along with the "Barricade"

Cabela's sells a unit that just hangs in the safe, when the balls inside change color, plug it in for 10-16 hrs (or til the balls change back to the right color) then put it back in the safe. Bout the size of couple of boxes of rifle shells.

Next time I'm in the safe I will get you the actual name.

Check you safe. Mine has a hole in the bottom left corner just for running a cord. I use the goldenrod dehumidifier in mine and have not had any problems. Basicly it is just a low output heater. You can grab it with your hand and it is warm but not hot. It basicly keeps everything in the safe slightly warmer than the outside air so nothing will condense on the steel.

Thanks for the links. I've had the same problem and have been using dessicants in the safe but know they wont last forever. I bought a smaller re-chargeable dehumidifier off ebay today for $16.00 after checking those other units out. I had to drill a 1/4" hole in the back of the safe. Removed the plug, stuffed the chord, and reatached the plug.
I put a second one in also, just in case one gave out unaware.

Have not had any problems with either of them.

Coug, the best product I've found for rust prevention has been "Eezox".
Available online from the link below. If it's good enough for daily use by hunting guides in central Alaska, it's good enough for me.
I've read so many tests about the efficiency of various oils, etc, and this product consistently comes out on top, or near it. Rem-Oil as you mentioned usually comes out near the bottom, as was my experience also(I've not tried any of their newer stuff).
I would not recommend Eezox for lubrication only.
My safe is in a semi warm spot in my house and I've not had to resort to the de-humidifier products.

Wow! Thats a serious moisture problem. A WEEK! Dry Z Air is a good product. You could drill a hole in the bottom of your safe like stated above. Then run the cord out the back for a dehumidifier. I use rem oil too. Changing to a heavier oil will help, but it will not solve the problem.

'Nother thing worth mentioning is where the culprit moisture is originating. If your safe is sitting on a concrete slab-on-grade (SOG) or your home's sub-floor crawl space doesn't have a 6-mil vapor barrier over the soil and your safe is in an unheated closet, you'll likely have rust and mold.

If it is the SOG, you could try setting your safe on something to keep the moisture vapor from directly entering the bolt holes in the bottom of your safe. Painted plywood, sheet rubber, torch down roofing, etc. set over a bead of caulk around any holddown bolts would probably help matters.

Never had any rusts problems on my firearms.

Or, go to an arts and crafts store and buy a box of granulated silica for a few bucks, put it in cheese cloth or a sock and presto.

Works just as well as anything on those interweb sites and costs a fraction of them.
