I needed an overhead rod rack for my pickup canopy and found this product from thesundeckonline (Baja Edd).
I needed a "hook" style for the overhead application and Baja Edd has these in small. medium, large. The molds are theirs and they are available nowhere else. They may seem a little pricey to some, but they are well worth the cost for such a fine product.
Baja Edd seems to be world headquarters for all things rod rack.

The canopy is a Snug Top Sportsman which has a reinforced top that is about 1-1/2" thick. I used #12 x 3/4" SS wood screws under the hooks for a clean appearance.

The flat bar is 1/8" x 2" aluminum which was drilled and tapped for 8-32 Allen drive machine srews.

I left one side off to show the layout.

This set has medium hooks front and back. It works well for being able to sling the rod without having to crawl inside.
The other bank (opposite side, not installed yet) will have medium/back and small/front for those rough roads.

In the overhead location you can't see the rods from the outside very well, if at all. I drive around all week in town with the rods up there.

Looks pretty good. I have been thinking of something for the underside of my tonneau cover. Do those hooks swing open and closed?

No, it's a one-piece, molded part.

Thanks for sharing. I jerry-rigged something in my car, but the rod cases roll around. Your installation gives me some ideas.

I am so gona nock that off. What do you all think about a tube system to better protect the rods. Say 4 or 5 ft of tube with a hook like that lined behind them. SUV side windows, canopy roofs 4 packs for in the boat? Folbe Rod lockers???

A tube system might be good for a boat application where the rods are in harm's way, mounted on the sides.

Overhead is a safe place and I wouldn't want or need a tube there. Although, if it was a fabric lined tube (overhead) you would just need the rubber hook system at the outboard, handle end. The tube would carry the tip end.

For rough roads you could make a short plug of 1-1/2" backer rod or foam pipe insulation and shove it the tip end to tighten up the rod.

That single hook and tube system would also work in a sidewall application.

The big item for me is to be able to stow the rod from the butt end and not deal with the tip end every time.
My driver's side bank has medium hooks front and back...I can stow without having to crawl back but it is possible that on a rough road the tip section could work out.
When I do the passenger side I'll use medium at the butt and small at the tip for rough road traveling, but I will have to crawl back to address the small hooks.

Hey Art, are you Chinese ?

grin

I use 2 shower curtain rods with some 3/4 inch closed cell pipe insulation zip tied. I generally travel with 5 or 6 rods take a velcro stap to hold them in place. The rods are adjustable and come in many differnt sizes just wedge them a few feet apart on the inside of the canopy. Under 20 bucks your good to go easy in easy out no faseners needed.

Hehehe....I did the same thing in my Jeep Cherokee.
Used the shower rod type that has to be cut to fit. After they're cut there is an adjustable tightening range built into one of the fittings on each rod.
For a non-skid covering on the bare aluminum rods I wrapped them with that rubbery shelving liner.
On the butt end shower rod I threaded on a half dozen of those fabric covered rubber bands that chicks use for pony tails. These make it easy to secure the butt ends of the fishing rods and they're always there.
On the front, nothing or a twist tie for rough roads.

Something like this is a good solution for a canopy that has a single ply roof. When you're happy with the location of the rods, I would use contact cement or some type of compatible fastener to lock down the ends of the shower rods.
