We used to fish out of the Kalama launch (very good launch by the way ) and caught a lot of fish this time of year but very few keepers. If you do launch there , go over to the Oregon side of the river downstream of the launch. We used to fish around and below the rock island by the nuke plant. You need a good anchor with plenty of rope for the outside as it is deep with pretty good current. You also have to be very watchful of the river traffic as they have the right-of-way. The area is patrolled by the sheriffs office boat and when they tell you to move...move.
We have done some days below the reactor building below the island right next to the bank. Watch your depth finder and be looking for 50-60 feet of water. This may vary with river flow.
We were using smelt and sandshrimp.
You might try to contact dcrzyfitter (Kris) as he fishes that part of the river more than do I believe.
Good Luck, Bill

PS,You might want to try out of Willow Grove below Longview as we catch more keepers there this time of year.

The Shad are in , so I would say there might be Sturgeon. Your probably better off fishing for Sturgeon on the lower part of the river . The water is sstill cool here.

You can also launch from Willow Grove.

Head upstream towards Longview and fish the channel just below the channel markers that sit at the ends of rows of pilings that jut out from an island just downstream from the powerlines. If that doesn't pan out Kalama and the place Laterun mentioned only a few minutes farther upstream towards Kalama are worth trying. There's also those slews that run on the backsides of those islands.

If you fish the mainstem you'll want a much (3x-4x) heavier pyramid sinker than if you fish the Astoria estuary or backwaters. The current in the tunnel hole directly across from the Willow Grove ramp is really strong.

Watch for retards that don't know how to anchor. They seem pretty thick around there and their favorite trick is to drop anchor 30 yards in front of you and let the current slam 'em back right into you and then act pissed off like you've violated their personal space.
