im talking about Jacob Schmidt, who started in 1894... i believe its made through Pabst, who started in 1844... and who also bought Rainier in the 90s...

Heidelberg and Rheinlander were the beers of choice back in my first couple years of college...I remember being appalled when the cost of cases of 11oz. Rheinlanders broke $4.99. After that, Buck's (which was to later become the Bellingham Bay Brewing Company) had Lone Star, the National Beer of Texas on tap...Happy Hour pricing was a thin dime for a pint, and a quarter for a pitcher, and Happy Hour ran from 11am til 8pm.

If I'm drinking a micro, I peak too early. With a breakfast beer, I can pace myself easier now that I've reached codgerhood and don't keep up on maintenance beer drinking.

Not sure if Rhinelander and Heidelberg were the same company or not...it's not like either one of them was ascot-worthy. They both came in the same 11oz. keg bottles, if I remember correctly...as salar pointed out, it was more than a few years ago

I consumed countless Rainier Ice through out high school. My best friends grandma lived on Lake Washington which is where the ski boat was kept and on those frequent occasions when school was not necessary and drinking and water skiing was imperative we learned the art of math . Those Rainier Ice were 10oz bottles so we were shorted 2 oz on a very regular basis, that just meant we had to drink a few extra to make up the shortage.

Stroh's

Fire-brewed, as I recall. The 15-pack was their scam. You were way cooler if you were polishing off a 15-pack than a half-rack.

We ran the whole gamut, though. It was Schlitz malt liquor for a while. Then Weinhard's Ale. Stroh's was in the mix. Some Old English 800 here and there. Schmidt animal beer.........with the appropriate quarry on the can depending on what you were out to kill that day. Then in college, when funds were really tight, it was BEER..........in the white can with black block letters.........BEER.

Fun times.

Raindogs, and the 10 oz raindog ice bottles were tasty treats and the Schmidtty, well duck, deer, or wolf, any and every was a fine hunt!

Surprised nobody brought up that fine brew in the squatty green bottle--- Mickeys Big Mouth--- or as I took to calling it Green Death.

Woke up under the pool table at the hill bar one morning, not quite sure how I got there or where my shirt went, but it must have been fun......

Sorry Jerry but "the green death" was Rainier Ale bought at the liquor store.....6%....

And Rhinelander was Rainier's "price" beer...at least it was when I worked there in the early '70's.

Progress - - in beer choices. I recall stores having as few as 2 to 4 choices in brand availability. You youngsters may not recall how big a deal we thought it was when the eastern brands found their way to local store shelves. After graduating from high school on Oly and Rainier, with a rare Heidelberg for variety, and once getting way too sick on Rhinelander, I still remember thinking that eastern brew, Budweiser was quality stuff. And so it seemed, until the micros arrived, effectively dividing the beer world into the macro and micro camps.

Now many have witnessed that the Legend That Is Stam will drink anything with % alcohol on its label, so there's no surprise in learning that Paker's cool photo of the Dungy leg and beer can belonged to Stam. However, there is another photo of Rainiers all around. And I wouldn't have even mentioned this except that Paker is well known around here as a microbrew snob who's extolled the virtues of uncommon and difficult to find micros. And it's not like one expects an extensive beer list anywhere in SE, but is Rainier the only beer you guys had to choose from on this fishing trip that's too good for stay at home moms? Or was it just the cheapest beer available at friendy AK prices?

We called Columbia the green death. I guess there were several.
