Any of our esteemed dark Siders catch one? Pics? How did they fight? Planning a trip in Belize next May and it’s on the bucket list.

Hard and fast fighters. Nice ones can dump a spool quickly. Easily spooked fish. Gotta get your stealth on and be able lead fish with well placed casts. You'll need to be able to double haul punch a moderately heavy fly at least 50 - 60 ft in windy conditions. If there are Permit around, fish for those instead. Once you catch a big fat Permit, you'll mostly forget about Boners. PM if deeper Boner details wanted.

Belize is good for numbers but not size from what I’ve been told.
Never fished for them there thought. Good opportunity for permit there.
Saw some tanks in the Keys, but I got schooled by them.
Caught a number of nice size bones in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.
My personal best was a fish around 31” from Exuma.

I like them, well, mostly because even I could catch them.

Get a fly close and they eat it. After fishing for Roosters and getting the fat middle finger refusal more times than not it was nice to make a cast and just have them just eat it.

Little ones are sports cars, big ones are freight trains.

I've fished for bonefish in Mexico, Bahamas, and Belize. In Ascension Bay, Mexico and Belize the bonefish are small, not many over two pounds. I caught one at eight pounds in the Bahamas, with the smallest about three, equal to the largest I caught in Mexico. Most bonefish in Mexico and Belize don't even run into the backing, but they are still fun. A 6-weight rod is more than enough for the bonefish, but most anglers cast an 8 because of the wind.

I'd fish bones for a day and then focus on permit. Permit are challenging. First you have to hunt for them. Then when you find one or more, you have to get in position for an effective cast. Then you have to make that effective cast. Then after all goes perfectly, Mr. Permit will follow your fly, and it's about 50:50 whether he will eat it, or say, "Nah, I don't care for the cut of your jib, fvck off Yankee!" Oh, but if he eats, hang on! Permit occur around the north end, like Caye Caulker and such, but they are far more abundant near the south end around Palentia. But watch out for crocs on the lagoon side.

Found hotels for the trip, grand caribe for ambergris and black rock lodge for the jungle. As Stoney says, looks like bones are small but plentiful. Fine with me! Sometimes tropical fish (big f jacks for an example) are borderline not fun bc of how strong they are.

And thanks salmo, permit seem to be in ambergris Caye but are more plentiful in caulker or plancencia. Next time I’ll plan specifically for permit.

My buddy Matt almost exclusively fishes Permit when he fishes down there. I'd text him and ask but we are feuding because he's a dodger fan.
