Are these the same fish?

Are these the same fish? - 02/27/10 07:57 PM

Todd caught the fish in the upper photo on Wednesday AM. I caught the fish in the lower photo on Thursday afternoon. Both in the same pool about 100 yards apart. We kinda think it's the same fish. What do you think?

Here's a bit more porn from our trip.

Before I can tell you, I'll need to see some more of the background.

smile

Wouldn't surprise me if it's the same fish.

Same fish, I think there is a scar by the nostril on each, if not there is 3 spots on the gillplate in the exact same places.

Either way it was a fun trip. Highlights include me saying to Rico, "I better not lose the fish. I have lost the last five in a row. “Of course it came off the instant I said that. Rico made me feel better by promptly losing one in the same manner. One other high point was tossing my float on the far side of huge log jam and remarking, "There's no way in hell I could lane one if I hooked one now. Seconds later a good fish climbed on and proved me right.

One other high point, was remarking, “I would love to hook one behind these guys, and then doing so almost immediately. Todd was a great sport and anchored his boat to come help me net it.

Overall we were something like 7 -16 which sucks for a lost land ration, but it’s damn nice to hook that many, even if we did bugger off too many.

4. Mixing Whisky and Zero doesn't lower the calories that much.
5. You know Todd's around because of the Busch can.
6. Looks like a fun couple of days.

Question. Did you tell Todd they would have put cork up there if they meant for him to put his hand up so high
on the rod?

1. I thought so too, even if they are the same fish.

2. I have had that for years , but never actually use it.

3. Yep, and Rico can still burn the hell out of it.

4. No worries, not that much coke was consumer.

5. Yep!

6. Double yep!

Spot pattern by the gill plate and on the snout appears to be the same fish.

What kind of fight did it put up getting caught for the second time in two days?

OK, where's the picture of the 3-1/2 gallons of clam chowder you made and I helped collect some of the ingredients.

And the steaks that Todd was to bring.

I thionk it fought a bit better for Todd. But he hooked it in much fsaster water than where i hooked it. I will say it fought pretty damn well both times. For me if headed to the bottom of the pool and tried to stay ther. Once I pried it up, it made a couple of good runs. Not spectacular - but not bad either.

3. When I last had any Jiffy-Pop when I was 14, I burnt it to a cinder under ideal kitchen conditions. I can't fault Rico for doing that on a campfire.

I keep thinking I may want to drift fish, but then I never do!

Chowder was eaten in ONE sitting by a bunch of ravenous - skipped lunch - steelheaders. That in spite of the fact I lost a major piece of my index finger makeing the chowder and never could find the missing piece of finger and nail . Richard said he thought one bite was kind of rubbery and had some crunch too. I think maybe I gave Rico the finger.

Rico brought some killer steaks. Todd brought Busch.

Looks like the same fish to me...and a nice one at that.

That first photo is one of the best photos of Todd I've ever seen! grin

I wish you could have read some of Todd's texts that he sent me one of those nights....[censored], I wish I could have read them! Not surprisingly, it sounds like you guys had a good time. The fish are just the icing on the cake.

If he sent you a text Thursday night , it should have been a beauty. Ask him what kind of mileage he got that night.

Great trip guys thumbs

I believe you 2 hooked the same fish. The scar in the nostril region looks identical. Behind the eye, if you follow the transition line between silver gillplate and dark back, the contours and spots are identical too. Nail in the coffin is to look at the few spots on the silver portion of the gillplate.....again, identical on both fish.

Agree...same fish.
What's with the bloody fingernail, Dave, in the first pic? Is that the result of the chowder making? smile

Also, I see you using a level wind. I thought you were a dyed in the wool spinner. Which do you prefer as an all around float reel?

That was indeed, chowder finger. That was three days after I did it.

I kept putting bandages on it, but every time I landed a fish I lost the bandage.

I am NOT a spinfisher. I have, and will again, but much prefer a baitcaster.

P.S. All that's missing from the pictorial are the 60 clams the four of us dug up yesterday afternoon after our third day of fishing.

Same fish. Pretty bright boy. Musta been well handled on day 1 to turn around and wanna dance already on day 2. I

f you fished the same stretch on day 2 how'd you do with hookups on day 2? Seems every time I go back to the same reach after a good day, the next day typically disappoints,

Re: Are these the same fish? - 02/28/10 12:26 AM

I did worse on Day 2 (three bites on Day 1, one on Day2)...the rest all did better on Day 2, but the stretch we fished was extended considerably longer than it was on Day 1. The same drift that gave up the same fish two times gave up about 75% of the bites for all three days...and we camped about 200 yards from it.

Good stuff.

It was great to meet you guys on the river that day.
Sounds like you enjoyed the rest of your trip.
Looks like the same fish.
I have a hard time catching one once.
You guys catch the same fish twice.
Legendary.

Oh yeah. They still make Jiffy Pop. It is an art-form to do a good job with that stuff. We have contests pretty much each summer. It is like golf, the least amount of UPKs wins. (UPK = Un-Popped Kernels). There is a story that my uncle got a 9 one time, but I was not a witness.

Nice pictures. One of my very favorite fishing memories of my entire life, happened in the section where Todd is fighting the fish.

Re: Are these the same fish? - 03/01/10 06:49 PM

The true art form is not burning the person doing the popping. I'm pretty sure from the photo that Rico is not in the top 10 when it comes to UPKs.

+1 Rocket, one of my greatest memories fishing also was right near where Todd is fighting that fish in the photo.

Though it came in handy, it's not mine. It was a Rico loaner.
