Skokomish fishing for Kings

Skokomish fishing for Kings - 07/19/10 12:09 AM

Have never fished the Skokomish and I am a bank fisherman. Any suggestions on where to fish and if the Skokomish is a good bank fishing river? Thanks for your input and if anyone wants to share on how to fish it that would be great as well!

i used to say go and do some walking to get away from the crowds but it's gotten so bad that there's going to be guys in every slot from highway 101 to the canal. my only advice that i can give any more is to wear your helmet and bring eggs.

And watch out for man turds!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not kidding either. Many who fish there are slightly, and I stress the word slightly, more evolved than cromagnon man. Theres a few good eggs in the bunch though. BTW, thats what your gonna want to bring. Good Eggs. -T

the skok and the samish have the same style crowds and mentality of people, lots of trash, paying to access certain spots of the river... i cant drive myself to fish the samish...maybe one or two trips to the skok for kings, silvers are just as bad....

its that time of year...salmon fisheries bring out the worst...

Tie an eye loop on the largest legal size barbless hook with a 10 foot leader, tuck a tuft of black yarn through the loop. Slide down a bead and a black corkie. Grab some 1oz cannonballs, swivels and a case of BUSCH and you are good to go.

I have fished the Skok for years using black yarn and black corkies and they "DO" bite them. The Kings think they are leaches. Thats why the hooks are stuck to the fishes bodies and heads. Furthermore, man turds add vital nutrients to the watershed. The fry love corn. Good Luk-TBJ

In 1970 you could buy a $10 fishing license from the Skokomish Tribe and fish on the reservation, and there was hardly anyone else fishing there. I used to fly fish for sea run cutthroat there. That is a scene that sure has changed.

Theres plenty of other rivers that have similar problesm like the Skokomish and your right these early arriving fish have quality meat and great eggs. I do fish this river each year and try to avoid the weekends and stick to weekday evenings, less crowds and fewer problems.

It's a real shame, great accessabiity, quality fish, but some bad apples really ruin it for everyone else. I guess I'm guilty as charged.

AuntyM AMEN!

I think after last years compelte trashing of the river, the fines placed on Mr. Hunter from running a illegal RV park, and the new rules in place I'm praying for better conditions.

Bring on Fish & Game, Sherriff, and whomever else can write some tickets, once you send a strong message it just might get better.

Hunter Farms is not allowing any campers (RV, trailers, etc) on the property, camping is allowed but only in tents. Wish they made is a day use only, last year you had guys on the river fishing at 1:00 in the morning.

sort of makes me think of some guys i've run into on the satsop in january and february just looking like average fishermen, when i've seen them on the skokomish in august and october being complete animals.

i always said i'd give up on that river when i moved away from olympia. it was a local opportunity to get into some good fishing, which is hard to come by in that area. that was my only excuse for fishing it the last 5 or 6 years...it was close to home. i won't be fishing it this season, because i moved to where you can get away from some of the idiots.

if you're one of the guys driving down there from everett...you're a tool.

PS. Sure hope you were not wasting your money on the RVRSNGR hooks. Vision's work just fine for that and are WAY cheaper! Besides, since they are a light wire hook, one good yank when the game officers show up, and the hook bends right out and you're home free and off the hook...so to speak!

Simple, the band tied in along the egg loop is there to hold the sand shrimp. Larger diameter of the band helps avoid cutting through the soft bait. The band is tied to come out the top end of the knot to facilitate replacing the bait on the hook below the float.

The rubber band isn't to hold the bait, it's the lure. They can see black yarn coming sometimes. Having a rubber band makes you look more legit than a bare hook.

I'll leave some sandshrimp containers on the bank for you Parker. I won't be using them there of course but I've got some old ones sitting on the floor of my car stinking it up. I'll just clean out the floor of my car and dump them in a pile along with some empty Schlitz cans, one flipflop and an ashtray full of roaches and newport menthols cigarette butts.

Re: Skokomish - Not for the faint of heart/or me. - 08/02/10 11:36 AM

I can say I have partook in a Skok opening day. Here is the scary details:

4:40 am Sunday morning, I hear a scratchin on the outside of my tent, "wake up lets gooo". So, I got up grabbed my eggs and a rod, and we headed over.

Got to the Purdy Cut-off road and was in awe. I told the guy I was with that we probably weren't going to get to fish. I counted at least 4 rigs that in an effort to get a parking spot along the PC-off nearly flipped over in the soft ditch. Two rigs were on their side in the swamp.

Anyways, we actually found a spot only 100yards from where I wanted to access the river. As we waded up to the spot I thought we might fish was wall to wall with flossermen (this is at 5:15), but below it 50 yards was a little scoop with some brush around it where I thought fish might head to get out of harms way.

Long story short, there was some chrome kings hanging out in this scoop. Me and my buddy had the spot to ourselves the entire time. By 6:15 we were 4 for 10 or 12 and still didn't have anyone fishing with us. Early on the fish were pretty aggro, the fish we were able to land, had our eggs way down in their throat. At one point we were getting a good hard chew on every other cast. Since there was no ripping in our area the fish were calm, we never had any issues with foul hooking them. I honestly had a great time, but I probably won't go back.

The good, bad and ugly:

Good: There was lots of fish, so even the secondary and third-ary spots had fish for the non-combative types to get action. There also was an entire stretch of river where guys were fishing floats and eggs. Not letting any flosserman in the mix, and they were hammering the fish. Kudos to that group.

Bad: Even though the fish were aggressive and easy to catch. The swing, rip, and "coming down" crew still ruled over most of the stacking holes. I hate watching these guys pull on a tail or dorsal hooked fish. They would spend 10 minutes on a 10# fish, just tiring it out.

Ugly: Saw several fish poached (dorsal hooked and retained, etc), several hundred fish already sporting their christmas tree look. There was no way any enforcement could keep up with this circus, next year they will need to bring in the National Guard.

When I was leaving I gave a couple of guys my leftover eggs, and pointed them in the direction of the spot we were fishing. I hope they got some fish.

Re: Skokomish - Not for the faint of heart/or me. - 08/02/10 12:05 PM

I was up there as well, hooked quite a few nice fish but no keepers for me. One nice King landed but it was wild so back in she went unharmed.

Saw most if, not all of the fish taken were illegal, a guy fishing next to me took two after only a hour fishing, thought he was going to give me whiplash from his swinging.

You can change/add to the rules and regulations, but until you enforce them nothing will change. And for the rivers sake folks, if you pack it in, PACK IT OUT! The banks already look like a gargebadge dump, it's really sad........

Expect a closure on this one soon.

Re: Skokomish fishing for Kings - 08/02/10 01:39 PM

I fished it from dawn till dusk. At first light, it was fish on every cast for several hours but it slowed down a bit during the day around 2 and picked up a bit more as the sun was going down but it was only fish on every five minutes at sundown. I think most of the fish have been pulled from the river. When the next rain pushes more fish up, i'll be back down. I was using 12 foot leader with red bead.

Right after they start writing tickets for snagging, retaining snagged fish, retaining more fish than the daily limit, parking on the road surface, meth use, $hitting on the trails and river banks, damaging streamside habitat, and generally making a public nuisance.

Absolutely right! We should pass some laws!

Oh, wait, there already are laws.

I guess enforcement costs money, and if the alleged perpetrators can't pay the fine then there's just no money. mad

$hit.

Is this grammar/spelling representative of what our public school system is putting out these days?

When people were bashing the Skoke for having a load of "non-English speaking" snaggers/rulebreakers, at first I thought they meant foreigners/immigrants from outside the USA. Now I see that the "non-English" snaggers/rulebreakers are also inclusive of white local homegrown all-American rednecks.
Posted by: Salmo g.

Re: Skokomish fishing for Kings - 08/08/10 04:34 PM

I don't assume that this cadre of non-English speaking Skok fishermen is the product of US public education, cuz there's no indication they actually attended, let alone finished.

The annual Skok threads, first pre-season football games of the year, and I have to call my soccer team this week. Where did the summer go?

My cousin fished there yesterday, and I think I can honestly say the vibe is slowly changing (I noticed it the time I went). He noticed it too. He said he fished in a hole of about 20 guys and it was 90% bobber floppers. There was only a few rippers in there messing it up for everyone else. It is still unbelievably crowded, but there is starting to be some change down there. It is a small change, but it would be cool to see the ethic move back to a real fishery, where the guys with the best bait and best ability to draw a strike win.

Camp meat from the Skok.

If you are fishing a river where you are so close to a jackass that you have to display a gun to keep said jackass from ruining your gear and fighting you as he breaks his own gear simply trying to cast, you are clearly in the wrong spot, if not the wrong river.

If we put more money towards the hatcheries and habitat conservation rather than paying some dickweed game warden 60k a year to protect some stupid hatchery fish then we would need not worry about what someone is doing to feed there family.

Re: Skokomish fishing for Kings - 08/16/10 12:57 AM

Kings bite eggs on the skok, and for some of us it is the closest river that holds fish, the fact that it is the first to hold fishable numbers of kings brings people from all over the state, thus the numbers. Has there been unsportsmanlike conduct at times, I am sorry to say yes. Can we improve on that , yes so we keep trying. So when you come to visit, like me, please bring a trash container to haul out your stuff and maybe a bit more.........THANKS.......
