I spooned up a gorgeous summer run last night on a copper 2/5's. I would have some porn if it didn't death roll at my feet and shake the hook. I probably looked pretty funny to the guy across the river when I threw my rod down and dove on the fish. haha. it was a nice day to be on the river though. something about fishing for summer runs on a crisp day warms my blood.

So is porn defined as grainy photos of dark fish? If this is the new art of fish porn, I didn't get the memo.

I'll see if I can get pics of something other than a pile of Addicted's tangled up fishing rods today...off to meet him now for a little coho/summer run combo day.

Here's a guy who's had a bit of practice perfecting at least one of the patented fNp pseudo-MEGA-hawg compositions... with a bit of help from the cameraman to maximize the angle of the dangle.... to produce a bonafide Orygun 44! (minus the flaming "fire-engine" flanks and charcoal "chrome black" belly)



Probably the toughest light to get a money shot is right at sunup... direct and blinding yellow-orange light for the subject, originating low on the east horizon, making it nearly impossible for the cam-man to avoid casting a shadow on the subject. I think we tag-teamed a near perfect Kodak moment for the challenging conditions. One of many magic moments from an unforgettable birthday weekend.

Thanks to you guys who aren't being dicks. I don't see why I get jumped on for simply posting photos but whatever, hate on me. It's cool.
And for those who actually posted photos, some nice fish there boys.

Granted the fish were a little dark, they were just starting to turn. It may not look like it in the picture but they were brighter than that.
But all thats beside the point, i only kept one of the chrome fish in the picture. Gave my other 2 to my buddy for the smoker.
Even thats beside the point because each one of those fish was stuffed with eggs. We know are sitting on a big ol' mess of coho eggs.

doc, sadly I've hung a few fish over 55 including a 70 in 2010.... i think this one easily cleared 57.6....regardless, I was overjoyed to let a big one go for a change

The best part about that fish, was that a very well known guide in that area (who is a complete d!ck on the river) had just finished fishing that hole. As he dropped to the bottom end, we tossed out bobbers with shrimp and eggs and instantly hooked up. We yelled, "ya missed one!" and he fired up the jet and blew off down river.

Caught this late summer king yesterday, put up a great fight and ran all over the hole. The cast before this king brought me a colored 14 lb or so buck that got let go as well as the king obviously. Missed a few other bobber downs that all missed on the set. later found some chums that put up one hell of a fight on my 1-4 lb, 11ft noodle rod. Got my arse kicked haha

God I'm glad I'm not the only guy that noticed the reel.

Fair question....well for starters, it's hunting season right now and I don't have anything recent. When I was a young gun like you I used to chase salmon in the rivers, but for some reason it just lost its luster. For the most part I'm a "salmon in the salt and steelhead in the river" kind of guy. But I hope to get out soon for some fresh chum salmon...maybe I'll take some pictures for ya.

The Chetco is one of the most beautiful streams on the planet, IMO.
Bluish-green color when it's right, small cobble-almost snag free, Madrona trees, etc., etc.
It's a different neighborhood.

I've kinda burned out on the photo taking thing. I don't bring a camera other than my phone on most trips, and I lack the motivation to pull it out when a fish gets landed any more.

I suppose it's partly because so many of the areas I used to fish in solitude are now a clown show of people and I don't want to draw anyone else to where I am.

These days, I'll only fish out the camera for a superb fish, and to be honest, there has been a shortage of that kind of fish coming to hand for me.

Or a haircut. He kinda looks like the girl in Hanson.

Along the theme of past glories....

Bout time a few fish pictures surfaced on this web site. I remember a few years back when during the peak of steelhead season a guy could count on perusing a thread or two about steelhead fishing with a handful of pictures to accompany.

I think FB has really taken a bite out of fishing forum porn......a guy can post a picture there and not get tarred-n-feathered for gripping it too tightly, holding it out too far, exaggerating it's weight, wearing the wrong hat and waders, holding it out of the water, etc.

That and you do not have to share them through a third party site on FB.

Facebook has helped ruin many a good week.
So many clowns catch a fish or two and literally post pictures as they are still on the river. Then everyone is there the next day.

I'm not on Facebook but perhaps instead of checking the weather/river flows I should just go there.

I agree Facebook ruined PP and has not helped fishing either.

You have to follow me on Snapchat to see my fish now. It is much more fun than Facebook, plus my mom is not on there and we don't have to be PC.

I credit PP with helping me meet some really cool, quality people.

If I was fishing much I would throw up some pictures.
Truth is I'm not and that has a ton to do with the fact that the rivers are more crowded.
I always fish to get away and short of walking a few small streams getting away is impossible.
The times is a changing and I wish we were still in the pre Goretex era.

We had a classic this winter up in Whatcom County. A guy playing like an expert posted some pics of dark coho saying thy were native steelhead with some text that implied this was routine and bragging a bit. Of course thy were also hauled up on the rocks. When the Internet unloaded on him the butt hurt was enormous, he tried to backpedal but ultimately everything was wiped at his request because he looked like such a dumb ass. That is just another sad story of some young know nothing playing expert/guide. It is fuckin obnoxious and happening more and more.

10 years ago i was working swing shift, 5 - 1:30am, and had tues-wednesday off. often i'd be on the river 5 days a week, because there were a half dozen rivers within an hour's drive from home that i could run out to, fish a few hours and come home for a nap before i went back to work. i'd venture further out on my days off, and usually take a break on the weekends. during the week there were very few people on the lesser fished rivers.

since those days, we've lost opportunity nearly all the puget sound rivers, and the cowlitz has lost its early run of fish, which combined, have ruined the quality of fishing nearly everywhere else within 2 hours of the I5 corridor. the fact that the number of guides has also exploded in that time does not help things either.

attitudes have changed. rather than going out fishing to enjoy time spent on the water, it's turned into a narcissistic ego trip for many. the worst of it are the "crews" of flat brim hat wearing douchebags who travel in packs, who post photos of everything they catch on facebook like a bunch of teenage girls.

the worst of that, is that these guys aren't afraid to go out off the beaten path and bring their hatchery meat hole mentality with them. it's one thing to have someone crowd you in a hatchery hole, it's something else entirely when you're 5 miles up a logging road with nobody else around.

just getting up early and going a bit out of the way isn't enough any more, i guess i'm just outclassed. most of the time i spend on the water now is to just unwind and i don't catch that many fish, especially winter runs any more.

It is truly fascinating how those who are "connected" via social media are so isolated in their own little worlds. They think they know but they don't and the internet's best hardly holds a candle to what real life has to offer.

Honestly, the real world almost daily is far more amazing than anything on the Internet. Would you rather go steelhead fishing for a week in BC or give up social media forever. I think everyone here would go steel heading in BC.

But the real question is why do we even give a [Bleeeeep!] about capturing it for any reason? There is a great old Kinks song about photos. It captures well the irony of a picture, how important they seem to us while we are around to see them, and yet how silly they are in the greater scheme of things and that includes steelhead photos.

I may hate a lot of things, but I don't hate the Internet, I just think it is sorta sad that so much of it is dedicated to photos and that those photos are likely a waste of time in the greater scheme of things.

I kind of wonder if some of these photo first fishermen would even be out there if it weren't for the seeming power of a steelhead bragger shot.

Well said. Now you know why I fish the saltwater all year the past bunch of years. My sled gets run once or twice a year just to make sure it still works.

I totally agree with everything you said about social media, but I have a different take on pictures, most likely because I'm an old dude that remembers film and I still print photos to put in albums...

I take pictures of a fishing trip to capture the people and places, and the hopefully the feelings we were having at the time, along with a hero shot to capture the kill... It is true that memories fade, but sometimes looking back at pictures of those memories makes them all so real again...

I lost a good friend and fishing buddy to a motorcycle accident a few years ago. Every year I look thru the album of photo's from our fishing trips together and the details of each of those trips never fails to put a smile on my face... I hope someday that my kids can look at pictures of me and the times we spent together and keep the good memories of me alive... in much the same way I do with my grandpa and the photo's of me and him.

I do agree, that pictures are useless except for the generation that knew the people in the photo's personally. Also, It seems anymore that with social media and the internet, most people are using photo's as a way to get attention and those photo's become worthless once you post a new one...

Totally agree Piper. The assertion about "how silly they are in the greater scheme of things" just doesn't resonate with this middle-aged podunk country doc.

Good pics are like good Scotch. They just get better with age.... WAY better. Anyone here with a picture of fishing with pops or gramps will likely treasure the moment and could re-tell the story behind it like it was yesterday.

Piper's awesome photo contributions here are a perfect example. The awesome pics of the Piper Jr crew are priceless. Trust me, you'll be diggin' 'em up when your boys are off to college... or married off to some gal far away, strapped with the responsibilities of a husband or father that may one day keep him from ever spending any quality time on the water with you.

And when those boys are gathered around when you're too sick or disabled, they'll regale one another over those old pics with tales of good times past and reflect on just how lucky they were to have a Dad like you.

Multiply times 10 after your funeral.

Motivation along with the tone and context with which an image is shared tells the true story.

I take photos for me, and the people I care about. I share them here now and then because I believe that you have to give a little to get a little. I like to read about and see visual representations of other peoples adventures and meaningful experiences, they help shape my own.

Once upon a time a guy could find those things here. Lately it's a bunch of inspirational technical gear speak or political banter that is a waste of bandwidth and brainpower. I keep looking and hoping though, for now.

The posts since this thread was resurrected are poignant, sad, and true. That being said, I do love pictures.

I read this board nearly daily, and I legitimately mourn for steelhead rivers I have never, and likely will never fish (Sky, Skagit, Sauk, Duck, Green, Queets, Etc..). I am an Idaho guy, and yet I truly mourn the state of WA steelheading (since I believe even now, that outside BC, the most magnificent steelhead in our hemisphere still call WA (even the PS, where we can't fish during prime time, home)) .

My own river has a consistent number of fish, mostly hatchery, with a good average size, even legit 20#s, and yet, over the last 20 years, side-drifting, pressure, ego, and me-first attitudes have changed the game on "my" waters.

However, I refuse to let that stop me. Even on a large river like the Clearwater, I see pressure in almost every hole I fish, but I am not discouraged, because there is still wonder to be had, (especially if I can value growth as an angler over catching (ie...seeking new, unexplored water...).

Maybe I am naive, but I refuse to give it up, For me, steelhead are simply the most beautiful creatures I have ever seen, and I am an animal nerd. I'm 35, perhaps halfway through this journey called life, and I could not imagine life without steelheading.

Though I've been at it for 25 years, I still consider myself a newbie, which is awesome, rewarding, and satisfying. I realize that I cannot compare the true world-class wild WA steelhead fisheries that most on this board enjoyed in my lifetime, with my upriver "boots," but I can understand the loss that I see seeping through reading many, many posts here.

I love steelhead, deeply and profoundly, but I also believe that all may not be lost, at least yet. This community has given me so much, and the fulcrum of this community rests, in part, with these amazing sea-run trout.

I'm rambling, but I can't give it up, even on pressured days, when the odds are against a bankie like me, even on a "healthy" river like the Clearwater. I still dream of a week on the OP, or perhaps a lifetime trip to BC, and it gives me motivation to fish my home rivers deep in the Inland NW with effort, dedication, and most of all respect.

Each season, I usually land 2-5 absolutely beautiful native/wild/unclipped summer-runs (many, no more than 6-8 pounds, some much larger) that take my breath away and create deep gratitude when I let them swim. What more could angling ever give?

The "porn?" If the public will ever get behind steelhead, pictures can only help. I realize douches abuse it for their own ends, but people needs to see these creatures to have any chance of public support behind recovery.

In "short," bring on the pics, and never stop trying to protect and appreciate the greatest gamefish on earth.

It all starts with youth.
Will tomorrow's youth even have a chance to learn the trade??
I have my doubts and it's soo sad.

Below I don't see much "ego" in the pictures.
They are simply pictures that will hopefully be in my family forever.
Much like the pictures of my family homesteading the town which is now below the Cowlitz.
They are moments in time that hopefully remain ageless.

I will never forget giving the big motor just a bump of throttle to beach my sled on a hot summer day.
After a life time of doing it I never thought twice about it.
Obviously my 1 year old son on fresh legs had no clue it was coming.
He fell down and hit his face on the rod tray.
You can see his black eye in the picture I took at home below.

My eyes just started to water.
Pictures instantly bring back emotion.

Great post... I reside in Idaho now, although I grew up within a 20 min drive of 4 great PS steelhead rivers. Unfortunately, by the time I started, it was just in time to see the steelhead empire burn to the ground, along with it some of the greatest, most skilled steelheaders I've ever seen, departed.

I'm the same age as you and it is incredible to see how those rivers and that area has changed in 20+ years.

It makes me appreciate what Idaho has to offer and the quality and resilience of these long traveling summer runs. It's not the same as fishing a rainforest stream for mint bright winter runs, but it's a fishery that deserves alot of praise for its hatchery and wild steelhead, in the face of all the litigation and slandering of hatchery fish.

Well, Dudes, it's looking bad, but I'll still take a day on a river (ANY river) over a day at work every time. I've probably not caught anywhere near the numbers of steelhead you guys who have been around since the 70s and 80s have, but I've caught enough to know what they're all about, and I love all of it. By the way, what they're all about (for me) includes the sights, the sounds, and the friends made pursuing them. My fishing buddies (big, small, male, and female) are among the most dependable friends I have known, probably because it's always the same thing that brings us together, and it's something we really enjoy. I also love that every day fishing is a little different. Someone once said variety is the spice of life....

Social media is a colossal waste of time. There is value in chatting with old friends you may never see again, but beyond that, it basically amounts to wasting time with your friends that should be spending time actually WITH friends. I am probably the worst Facebook friend ever. Twice, I've had flurries where I've gotten into it a bit, but both times, I completely disappeared after just a few days. Don't get me wrong; I really enjoyed my old high school friend's pictorial account of his epic journey along the Pacific Crest Trail. It's just the drivel that makes up the other 95% that turns me off.

As regards pictures, the best ones are the ones I forget to take, usually because I'm too caught up in the moment to dig out a camera. Still, I'm glad to have a few great pics of some great fish and some amazing places. One of these days, I will have a man cave (probably more like an old man cave, but I'll appreciate it more that way, right?). I'm gonna have lots of great pics, many courtesy of my aforementioned fishing buddies, with which to adorn the walls.

Beezy: Make sure you keep a few pics of steelhead you've caught, even if you don't like them that much. They'll make an important visual aid when you have the occasion to ramble about days past to future generations. All things considered we are fairly spoiled for fishing purposes around here. Those Westslope cutties are indeed beautiful (and aggressive). Some giant smallmouth bass in that watershed as well.

It's all about the memories. Here's a video of my wife's 92 year old grandpa catching his biggest walleye last summer up in LOTW in Ontario. A WWII and Korean War veteran, POW, Iowa corn farmer...the toughest man I've ever met. To capture a smile in his little slice of heaven up in Canada was a memory I'll always cherish. I'm glad I didn't botch the net job. I was nervous as hell.

My brother in-law is a native of North Carolina and is a blast to catch steelhead and salmon with as he brings the energy (he's a natural commentator).

My family didn't take pictures, outside of the "formal" portraits, while growing up. So, no pictures of the hunting or fishing trips, sports, much of anything. Memories in the portable hard drive of my mind.

So, we take lots of pics. Haven't (yet) done much with them but they are there to look at.
