Interesting, especially the cost aspect of it!

European Tackle Company Says They've Created A Line That Could Replace Braid

by Joe Cermele

I vividly remember the first spool of super line I ever bought. It was Berkley FireLine, it was all the rage, and given the price back then, I questioned whether this new-fangled string was really all it was cracked up to be. Fast forward to today, and I know I'm not the only angler that has many of his reels spooled with braid. Since the early days of FireLine and Spider Wire, the race has been on to build the best braid, and it seems like every other year or so, someone claims they've conquered the super line empire with "slick coat" this and "single fiber" that. While there have been many changes to braid and super line, what hasn't changed is the cost, which manufacturers say reflects the amount of time it takes to make the stuff. I remember when Suffix's 832 braid featuring GORE fiber came out, my buddy at the company told me it takes something like 8 hours to spin one 300-yard spool. Well, not only has European company World Fishing Tackle claimed they've created the first mono-braid hybrid that's better than braid, they say it won't cost you nearly as much money as what's on shelves now because they can make it pretty fast.

From the story on Angling-international.com:

The line, called Gliss, is made from extruded hemp fibres and according to WFT’s Managing Director, Christian Dibisch, combines the qualities of both a monofilament and a braid.

“Gliss looks like a mono, but has huge advantages, including almost zero stretch. Other lines have at least three times more stretch,” Dibisch told Angling International. “It also has extremely low diameter-to-breaking strength ratios. At 0.010 diameter, it has 4kg strength.

The potential for Gliss is further boosted by the fact that it can be produced far more quickly and cheaply than braid. Dibisch estimated that it takes around 100 hours to produce 1,000 metres of braid, depending on the type. But he can manufacture the same length of Gliss in a matter of minutes.

“Production is so fast that I am sure it will replace braid in certain fields of fishing,” said Dibisch. “It is ideal for any application where low stretch is an advantage, such as lure fishing and long range fishing. Light lures can be controlled more sensitively than ever before.

Coming from someone who still thinks mono is the best choice for a lot of situations, this line has definitely piqued my interest. If I can get my hands on some, I'll report back.

Cheaper, thinner, and made of natural fibers?

Sounds pretty good to me.

Definitely got my attention. looking forward to hearing more and perhaps some field testing.

Not too impressed with the 0.010 diameter, 4kg strength. I'm looking at a spool of ultragreen that has .012@4.5 kg and I consider UG on the thick side for that 10/4.5kg rating.

Interesting indeed, though I'm still trying to figure out what's so wrong with mono in the first place. If this stuff "floats" like braid, I can see where it would be a better alternative for bobber fishing....

I'm not even entirely sure what that means but I'm ready to call BS.

Keta -
I too was not impressed with its strength; I think 8# maximum ultra green has a diameter of 0.10.

I do wonder if gliss in more biodegradable the current braids? If so we would have a winter. The mess lost braid is making on our waters is huge with a significant. I have seen several crabs that were tangled in braid - not a pretty picture.

Todd,

I can't tell from the pic, but would that line be less visible than braid? I don't like braid much except for float fishing, but I would really like a braid that had the same or similar visibility as mono for shallow runs and lies.

Hellifino...you guys know as much as I do about it, and it's what's in that article.

I am very interested in seeing it...but I really only use braid for a couple of things, fishing deep for bottomfish/halibut, and on my salmon trolling rod.

The only casting application I like braid for is chucking pencil poppers off the beach for striped bass, and float fishing. I never tried that hydrofloat from P line,I heard it sucked though. I would like to see a monofilament typer of line that floated.

Is it the hemp fibers that make it interesting to some?

On their website it says HMPE fibers.

curious about buoyancy, memory, shelf life, how uv rays affect it, and how adjusting a bobber stop on it will affect it (can F up mono if you tighten the nail knot style down)

Re: Gliss Fishing Line - 09/28/14 08:49 AM

buoyancy/floatability, very important in my float/jig fishing. Even with Power Pro, I treat my PP with Silicone Mucilin, every few days. The ability to mend the line, easy, is important to me.

Phil Maraude....change to the 4 - 6# small black hard rubber bobber stops, with eliminate any problems you have with the nail knot style bobber stops. I've used the same small black stop from June 7 to current time.....still works fine.

Re: Gliss Fishing Line - 09/29/14 01:33 AM

no issues here was just stating concerns/curiosities

i use the rubbers on mono with my center pin but nail knots on braid because the rubbers wear out from braid when adjusting depth

Based on the numbers reported in the review, .010 line diameter, 4 kg breaking strength, it gives a tensile strength of 112 k PSI. which puts it in the bottom quarter of the lines I tested. It's as good as a decent flourocarbon leader.

I'm highly suspicious of the reported length of time they give for manufacturing braided lines. I don't have a place for this stuff in my tackle box. It's barely stronger then UG.

Sometimes I fish for chums in high water in peoples back yards.

Re: Gliss Fishing Line - 10/12/14 11:12 AM

I just fished this line yesterday and can officially say it sucks. It sounds like cable through your guides unlike some braids(slick 8). I ended up breaking off two twitching jigs on good fish. Not a break at the knot. I came back with frayed line. Too bad because I had high hopes for a biodegradable line.

Re: Gliss Fishing Line - 10/12/14 12:00 PM

Bummer...biodegradable braid would be nice, if it didn't suck.
