Marine Area 4/20 Report - 05/06/15 11:13 PM

It's been quite a while since I've posted some photo's so I figured now would be as good a time as any to share them. I don't get a chance to take pictures most of the time but here is a smattering of shots. I also have some video to post soon.

I spend lots of time down here with the fish.

The most recent Tako season was great with some good water conditions and plenty of Tako.

Some good fish to poke as well.

Tako and Moi.

Big Nenue and Takos.

They say Octopus are intelligent but I never expected one to give me the middle finger.

Red Fish destined for the frying pan.

Turtle party on the beach.

One of the great things about Hawaii is all the variety of life available.

Bug Eye's.

It's good to eat good after swimming hard for half the day.

One of my favorite things is to spear a squid then go right home and eat it.

Or to spear a couple moi, take them right home and eat them.

Or to catch a Papio, take it home, turn it into ceviche or sashimi and eat it.

In a pinch I will buy some fresh Ahi at the store.

I still spend a good amount of time hangin on the beach with lines in the water.

I even manage to get back to WA every once in a while. Mostly to spend time with family but of course I have to go slay some chrome and a few boots with my brother from another mother Superfly. Always good times.

If I'm not working or diving or fishing I'm probably just hangin on the beach with my woman, my friends, my family or both or all three and usually we are fishing or diving.

My real little brother comes out to hang.

And an obligatory sunset pic to wrap it up. Thanks for looking thumbs

Hey Jake, where'd you learn all the fancy fish prep? Are you working in an upscale restaurant or something?

We had a good time there last spring, but a week goes by so fast.

If you aren't having fun, you aren't livin' right. You certainly asnwered that question with this post! If you and Polly could just get rid of that cracker roommate Fastwater you two would be set! grin

Any big screamer hookups at night lately?

That looks like the Costco Ahi special... if there is one thing I wish they had here stateside its that tray of Ahi for $18.00 you can get at the Kahului Costco!

I'm feeling feelings about this thread and I don't like it. Green with envy and red with player hate is not a good way to start my day. Damn you Jake.

Re-reading that, I guess I can see how it might be taken out of context rofl

When I fished with Jake off the beach I had one bite that took me for a very fast ride and broke off. I was thinking Trevally. Wondering if Jake had had any big hookups with Fish as of late. I don't need to ask how he does with his lady smile

Mahalos! laugh

Ryley, work is ruling my life right now so late night fishin has been about non existent. Day time bait dunking sun burn sessions have been happening often though! That will change soon as we get into summer and the type of business starts to shift. Bites are few and far between but it's all good because I know good things are comin.

Salmo, Yes. I'm always trying to up my game in that department since I cook for a living. This was a good week as I spent most of my days working with the Iron Chef and his crew of very talented chef's from all around the U.S., that was pretty freakin cool and I learned a lot and made some good connections.

Re: Marine Area 4/20 Report - Bump for more pics! - 11/07/15 11:26 PM

Decided to throw up some more photo's since there hasn't been much in that department on the board other than Mr. Coley G's awesome post on the hunting forum. It almost seems as if WA state is being shut down for fishing or something like that.

Been on some adventures and caught some nice fish and other things since the last time I posted on this thread so here's some pics.

Ventured South shortly after starting this thread for some relaxation, exploration, family time, lots of incredible food and a bit of fishing.

Home base was Lujan, Argentina which is an hour or so from Buenos Aires.

Besides my beautiful woman, the awesome fishing opportunities and the Argentinian people in general...the best thing about Argentina is the beef. Asado in particular. On every street corner is either a butcher shop, an Asado stand or both. How very convenient.

Typical roadside Asado plate. They will keep bringing you different cow parts until you say no mas. The chinchulin (intestine) was fabulous but I think my favorite was the morsilla (blood sausage) and molejas (sweet bread glands) and of course all the traditional cuts that you'd see in America were out of this world. $10 U.S. for a short loin that yielded 10 very large New York Steaks is typical. I was in heaven.

We frequented this shop.

And most homes feature an outdoor Asado grill so we were in luck. The grill at Polly's family home got a good workout while we were there.

Light the charcoal and load up the grill.

Crack a giant beer, watch the meat slow cook. They sell giant ice cold Stella everywhere. Lucky again.

Time to grind!

Took a road trip North to the boarder of Argentina and Uruguay to fish the Rio Uruguay for Dorado and giant catfish called Surubi. We stayed in and fished out of Concordia which is a super cool little town right on the river. The weather had recently changed to cold and it certainly wasn't peak season for our zone but we gave it a go with high hopes anyways.

Unfortunately this is as close as I'd get to a Dorado on this trip. Still had a great time and gained some knowledge to return with. Next time I will be successful.

The river is absolutely massive. My guide wanted to fish the middle of the river, in the wind. It wasn't working. It was easy to see that we were not only literally spinning circles but figuratively as well. A trolling motor and a side drifting lesson would help these guys out a lot.

Creepy crawly bait of choice.

Another boat fishing right.

Even though the fishing was slow it was a great to experience a new fishery. The trip in general was totally amazing, I think I had a smile on my face the entire time. This last Argentina photo sums it up well.

Re: Marine Area 4/20 Report - 11/07/15 11:56 PM

After two weeks of fun in the Southern Hemisphere it was time to head back up to the equator.

Fishing has been good and Tako season just took off in the last couple weeks. Lot's of giant bonefish. Caught one fish in particular that is probably my biggest ever. Released him in heavy surf so unfortunately no pics of the bones.

For a while this summer there were lots and lots of 8-14" Trevally around my zone. Lots of CnR fun on light line.

A Lai would climb on once in a while as well.

Simular to the Coho, our octopus were slow/fashionably late to the party as well. Luckily, they did show up and in mass. One morning I sorted through an easy 15 Tako, keeping 5 or 6 big ones and letting the rest go to grow. Some nice fish as well.

Since I scored the bait in the morning and knew that there were some fish scooting around I decided to head back for the afternoon with a couple rods, a few cold ones and a sack of bait.

It was a good choice.

This was the best day I've had in a while. There were a couple CnR bonefish mixed into the action as well. Seriously fun stuff.

Ate a lot of Sashimi that evening. And Ceviche, and Tacos. It was all good.

Been fishing some spots other that the home zone lately since grabbing some new wheels.

I like to sneak out for early morning beach sessions before work.

Stab some rods in the sand, jump in the water, find an octopus and start fishing. There's always something fun to see or swim with early in the day.

Been some giant swells already this fall. Driving the road to nowhere and checking out some monster waves with my lady.

As you all know fishing or spearfishing isn't always productive so I can't help but hit the local market for some fresh fish when I'm lazy, unsuccessful, short on time or just hungry for Ahi.

Today's Monchong and Ahi was KILLER!

I will leave you with some fitting signage for the road. Thanks for looking!

Enjoy the time you've got with the people you've got!

Good grief Jake. You make living in Hawaii seem like such a drag.

Awesome spread from start to finish. Great images to go with cool stories. Can't wait to get back down there and settle the score with a tako or two. You make a mean plate of grub as well man. Keep living the good life.

Re: Marine Area 4/20 Report - 08/01/16 03:49 PM

Well it's time to post some photos. Thanks for the motivation WDFWx1=0!

Tako season was good and stretched all the way into the Spring.

Poked some fish along the way.

With the Tako (bait) comes big bonefish! I've been pulling some graveyard shifts at work. In an effort to make the best of it I hit the beach and throw lines as the sun is coming up. It's been good.

Breakfast.

For a while there I was running into these line peelers every day damn near. Fun stuff.

Ran into a few of these buggers. Striped Papio or Barred Trevally. Superb eating.

Been doing some Island hopping.

Found the Big Island.

More to come...

Been exploring some out of the way places on Maui. Good times...

Fishing, swimming, hiking.

Found a Staminal out in the jungle.

Here's a good transition to some PNW fishing pics. An Oly Lowlife drinking some Olympia Brew on a beach in Hawaii.

Re: Marine Area 4/20 Report - 08/01/16 05:07 PM

Made it back to Washington a couple times recently. Was there for Family but found some fish too.

Happened to be in town for my FAVORITE fishery. Spring Chinook.

Spent an awesome day fishing with my little brother just a week after he had a close call with a Spontaneous Pneumothorax, collapsed lung, chest tubes and emergency surgery. That's right, he's a bad ass.

Also made it back in July. Of course I went fishing.

About 10 casts into my first morning of fishing this wild summer steelhead CRUSHED my spinner in the top of a nice riffle. This fish was out of the water before I woke up. It put on an incredible acrobatic display jumping an easy dozen times. It was the fish of the week even though I caught larger. It was awesome.

Fished with my dad and brother. That's always a good day whether we get fish or not.

Cuttin up the goods...

Back home on Maui for a few weeks then off to South America where I plan to eat a lot of Argentinian Asado and hopefully catch a Golden Dorado. Taking my brother along this time. Guaranteed to be fun. Some more fish and fun pics by summers end!
