estate/garage sale finds - 05/16/15 07:44 PM

got a phone call from a buddy who was at an estate sale a block from his home. he said I might want check it out.... this place was a cluster fudge mess of goodies. He spent $30 on a big storage bin of tossed sh!t and full of old school steelees! after cleaning a tangled mess he had over 60 steelees.

I went today and spent some time rummaging through 50+ years of boxes and jars, cans, tackle boxes. considering it had been boned over pretty good. I still found some goodies!!!

full bag of okies in original bag was sweet!!!

if this fits my evinrude 9.9 i'll be stoked! price was right in any case.

An entire bag of these old school rubber eggs!

a entire box of stainless siwash hooks

the bag on the right is stuffed with prettied leaders with okies!

more old school okies and real cork corkys!

I still have not really gone through the whole mess.

look out ebay here I come!

this mess is so tangled it came out full of steelees and other BS!

my buddy called and said that one of his totes he bought held a very special gem... old shimano silver 201 bantam!!! BOOYAH!!!! boys.

as I going through all this mess of gear I was forced to realize something. we all are horders of gear, more crap than we really realize we truly have. at some sad point somebody will be selling our horde of gear for next to nothing. smirk

sad reality but true you know.

A great find........most on here, under 30, would not have a clue of the treasures you have found......

Those stainless steel hooks are the real deal.....used on most of the commercial plugs and spoons in the 50's, and 60's.

Big bucks Brewer....on many of the items on your post!!!!

Awesome Find!!

I look every summer. Over the last 5 years my wife bought a bunch of stuff at 1 garage sale that had a bunch of Oakies and I cleaned my brothers stash out last year before the public hit his sale. But they are few and far between.

I keep on hoping to find a Big Stash of Sammy Specials. Love those things as a Steelhead option. They still work.

At garage sales, the early bird gets the okies, or they get told to "bugger off, we ain't open!" You did good to score some treasures late in the sale. Regarding the bag of okies, the Luhr Jensen bag may be original, but the original plastic okies were a Maxwell Manufacturing product. A mere technicality, the fish won't mind. Besides, there's likely some Maxwell originals in the rest of the drift bobbers you scored.

Hard to find good sales like you found anymore. Lots of competition for topless Tupperware and puzzles with missing pieces. The expression, "You've got to kiss a lot of frogs...," fits the garage/estate sale experience perfectly.

Re: estate/garage sale finds - 05/18/15 07:24 PM

my finished pile of salvaged spoons. even not so shiny ones should still out fish the RVRFSTR's right wink

full box of these too. any have a idea what these would be used for?

anyone what a needle hook would be used for? and yes a full box.

anyone know what this tool is used for?

found this Sammy special in a old envelope tied up and ready to fish.

by the way the prop will fit my evinrude too. this alone is worth a lot for what little I paid for everything.

Also I found another sealed package of 6 original okies that are identical to the previous package. to the member here who said they are not original I would be interested in having the differences explained

Re: estate/garage sale finds - 05/18/15 07:51 PM

Pretty big hooks....might be for a salmon fly of some type.
The needle eye has got to be extremely rare.

The tool might be a crimper for wire line sleeves.....for making up wire leaders, maybe.

Looks like some poor ol' duffer kicked the bucket.

I'm havin' all my schitt buried with me...fuk those garage salers pickin' over my bones.

Re: estate/garage sale finds - 05/18/15 08:05 PM

Needle eye hooks are used for rigging whole baits. Lots of old moochers used them in the old days for salmon. They use them for rigging Ballyhoo etc. they are easier to hide and tear up the bait less.

Re: estate/garage sale finds - 05/18/15 08:27 PM

They don't like lighter mono leaders that became popular in the 70's and 80's. My grandpa mooched with a 50 to 60 lb leader. For ballyhoo pin rigs in the Carib they use wire to 100lb plus mono for Dorado, wahoo big tuna etc. they use them on cedar plugs as well.

Re: estate/garage sale finds - 05/18/15 08:49 PM

From the early 60's to the mid 70's, I bought okies from Willie Slinker at Willie's Sport Store in Centralia a 100 at a time. They were .06 each. I think they were made by Grizzly Lures. Grizzly stopped producing okies in the mid 70's. After that they are not the originals, but I don't know if that makes any difference in their "fishiness". I never bought any of the later ones because I had so many of the Grizzly's and still do. I've seen the newer ones and they appear to be slightly different, but not different enough IMO. Luhr Jensen did not make the original okies.

Re: estate/garage sale finds - 05/19/15 09:23 AM

Working from memory here, buyer beware... The original Okie Drifter was made by Maxwell Manufacturing, of Vancouver, WA. Some older packaging is labeled, "Okie Drifter/Maxwell Manufacturing". Other packages carry the Grizzly Tackle brand name, but the lures were still a Maxwell product. Luhr-Jensen must have acquired the original Okie Drifter from Maxwell in the early/mid seventies because fishing publications from that time period advertise the "Luhr-Jensen Okie Drifter". Some other iconic originals acquired by Luhr-Jensen included the Les Davis salmon dodger and the Eddie Pope Hot Shot.

This link gives some good insight and history concerning changes in the local fishing tackle manufacturing industry:

Re: estate/garage sale finds - 05/30/15 01:51 PM

I simply think the okies for what ever the manufacturer of that 70/80s all were great. then suddenly craps hit the fans and they were never the same. those Styrofoam knock offs were garbage. the colors were the true secret. I was told the okies in orygone cheese are worth gold along with the nail polish pink.

Re: estate/garage sale finds - 05/30/15 03:15 PM

The following was purchased by myself, late 60 or early 70's.

Sammi Special was used by many of the guys I fished with....no messy hands.....AND THEY WORKED GOOD. Made me a good fishermen, but then there were lot's of wild and hatchery steelhead, in those years.

Steely Bobs were also good......those are Flash Glo's on the left hand card.....Flash Glo's had a price of $.69 and $.59 but were on sale for $.39

If any one is interested in buying all of these...9 Sammy Special, 4 Steely Bob, and the 11 Flash Glo.....send me a pm or else just wait until I die and be 1st at the garage sale......lmao

My worst fear is that when I die my wife will sell my fishing gear for what I told her I paid for it.
