Edmonds Coho Derby Saturday, Sept 12 win $5000 - 09/03/15 06:41 AM

Edmonds Coho Derby 2015 limited!

Saturday September 12, PSA Sno-King presents the Edmonds Coho Derby. This is a fun derby for the entire family. We really want to see parents get their kids out on the water and this derby is the one for them to be part of something special. Kids are our future and we want to see them in the great outdoors fishing. Grand prize is $5000.00 Kids division wins a trophy and a cash prize. Our derby the kids can win both the adult and kids division. In 2013 Essix Kelly won both the kids and adult division. I got to meet her dad. He told me afterwards that one of their downriggers went out and the winnings contributed to two new downriggers for their boat! What a great way to spend the earnings.

We have a live leader board for our derby. This is a fantastic system. We only need your ticket with the number and your fish when you come to the weigh in. This system automatically brings up your info, the weight is entered, and you are immediately placed on the leader board. You can check the leader board throughout the day on your smart phone on edmondscohoderby.com and click on the leaderboard at the top.

Gutz,
A great option for you would be the Bayside Weigh in station in Everett. If you have a contender then you can drive to Edmonds after weigh in for the ceremony.

Dont forget that these proceeds keep us fishing. We (PSA) worked with NOAA and stopped many Marine Protected Areas or no fishing zones from happening in the Puget Sound and it WAS happening! Please support the PSA derbies. Helps keep you and your kids fishing. Support those that take care of you. We are all in this together.

Good luck to all!

Should be good. Fished the beach on Whidbey yesterday floating herring, ended up 6 for 12 with 2 fish kept. Fish were on the small size, average was less than 5 lbs.

What a precipitous drop off in size of PS coho (and kings) I remember when 10th place was around 10 pounds. Now it is a five pounder?

There are bigger fish kicking around. My "horse" has put 2 ~12lbers in the boat this season so far and there are a couple pictures floating around online of some teeners. Good luck.

I am sure there are bigger fish around. When 2000 dudes go out and the biggest we get is a 7 and a half pounder it's a sign of what is happening out there is my only point.

Im well aware of the shrinking fish, just pointing out there are bigger fish than the derby results.

I am glad you are aware of it. My post was to try and make others aware. You made it sound like 2000 [Bleeeeep!] ups fished the derby.

Re: Edmonds Coho Derby Saturday, Sept 12 win $5000 - 09/16/15 05:35 PM

The last couple years have cemented the shrinking coho concept for me. Closer to Seattle, the mature coho I am catching are averaging 1-3 lbs. They're so small that the look like they'd pass right through 4 1/2" mesh. Could this be mother nature's way of defeating gill nets? Is it possible that these smaller fish are the specimens that can consistently pass through the gauntlet of gill nets in the duwamish and lake union??

It would sure make an interesting study!

Weird thing is how many people are out in their 'sound' boats and are unaware of what is happening. If this was the way coho were 30 years ago, when I got into it, I would have never stuck around. Lucky I launch for free with close access to some fish....

Re: Edmonds Coho Derby Saturday, Sept 12 win $5000 - 09/17/15 09:22 AM

This same conversation took place last year...and I participated in catching a bunch of four pounders in the local salt, too...but come October/November the coho we were catching in the local rivers were just as big as they ever were, and they didn't teleport there, they had to swim right past everyone fishing out there.

I have no idea why the catch rates are really good but the fish are mostly small...but I know this for sure: It's not because 8-15 pounders don't exist anymore, we'll be catching them in the rivers later this month.

Fish on...
