Hey, nice clams!

I have a question. What beach landing is best on copalis? I've always dug at Roosevelt and grayland. But obviously that's not possible. Would like to drive on the beach. Thanks.

We used the public entry at the hard corner at Ocean City last night. Decent size, easy digging smile

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 12/27/15 12:51 AM

The Copalis Beach was lit up pretty good with lotsa lanterns tonight.

fish4brains and I tagged teamed it with one lantern and found some nice ones. A little better grade in the bags than two nights ago, but they sure were laying DEEP, and the sand sure was compacted extra hard. Nearly every clam was found at the far end of each extracted core.

For the non-shovel camp, that makes it all the more critical to aim accurately with your tubes to keep from "shaving" the butt end off your clams. There were a couple in my bag that I wasn't particularly proud of.

Funny, they were showing great last night for us, but very small on average. Chowder for this batch.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) today approved the Copalis dig, scheduled Dec. 24, 25 and 26, after marine toxin tests showed the clams are safe to eat. All other beaches remain closed to recreational razor clam digging

No dice... if you get a Christmas dig, there won't be a New Years dig.

Just like good fishing tides, the clam tides cycle every two weeks.

Look at the moon.... full or absent = good clam tide. Half moons = $h!tty clam tides.

WDFW to announce tentative razor clam dig schedule in January

OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will announce in January a tentative schedule of razor clam digs, pending the outcome of marine toxin testing.

State shellfish managers will wait for the results of testing the week of Jan. 4 before planning another round of digs. Thousands of razor clam diggers recently enjoyed a three-day holiday opening at Copalis Beach, the first dig of the season.

Region 6 personnel have been on a "holiday schedule", tough to get much done toward year end and 2016 beginning.

Just looked, see that the commercial crab season, non tribal, opens Monday 1-4-2016......kinda follows my idea on holiday slow down...

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 01/23/16 01:34 PM

I think most folks looking out over the west horizon to see the seemingly tame surf were surprised to find out just how high up the beach that 16 ft swell would take those "little" waves. Saw one adult and 2 kiddos taken down by a good surge... and many folks went over their boots before they could scurry up the beach in time. Lotsa diggers had to abandon half-dug holes to escape the fury of the water.... only to have their exposed clam washed up the beach to get plucked off by the ever-present seagulls. It was a challenging dig, and not the best to take kiddos without dedicated (non-digging) adult supervision.

Where the last dig on my favorite patch of sand revealed obvious shows everywhere with no coaxing whatsoever (yielding easy 10 minute limits), last night it was a "no show" zone without a good pounding stick. It took an hour and a half plus to get the dirty deed done. Glad Mr/Mrs fop were there to help us pound our way to limits (2 pounders, 4 diggers). Mrs fop helped to top off my limit before we ran out of light!

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 01/23/16 03:14 PM

I don't dig anymore....not in 35+ years, so my comments are from someone that "used to dig", when the limit was more and waaaaaay less people digging.

On this dig, just seemed strange to me that Long Beach got lots of days but this area only 1 day......???????? Just wondering?????

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 01/23/16 05:22 PM

If the Copalis beaches are safe from toxins why is it not wide open like Long Beach?

I assume there are plenty of clams to harvest, if equitable harvest by QIN is not achieved we could argue foregone opportunity.
Posted by: eyeFISH

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 01/23/16 06:23 PM

Not sure we want to push the 50:50 shares... my understanding is that the state is historically WAY ahead on the clam harvest.
Posted by: Free_Globbin

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 01/23/16 06:47 PM

Each beach MUST receive TWO clean toxin screenings before they are allowed to be opened. The state is opening them as quickly as they can. Some beaches are affected far more by the toxins than others. The warm water we had raised the toxin levels more than usual. Combine that with the high fat content (where the toxins are stored) of razor clams, prolonging the amount of the time they hold onto the toxins, and you get beaches closed longer than usual. The toxin levels are decreasing and we should see more beaches opening later in the spring if this trend continues.

Copalis was hammered the last few weeks with higher than normal turn outs. If we want opportunities on it through the spring, we need to save some quota for later digs.

Jeez, I've lived here more then 35 years, limits have always been 1st 15 since 1980? When were they more then that, the '60's? Why not dig anymore? Lost the taste for razors? Bob R

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 02/05/16 10:20 AM

Long Beach is wide open digging.

Twin Harbors domoic acid level jumped back up to 55 last test. Gonna be a while before we see that open.

Mocrocks getting closer to an opener.

Copalis should be wide open from a toxin standpoint, but we've already taken 36% of our allocation on that beach in just a handful of openers, so they're being very conservative to stretch things out into the spring. I did hear from the clam manager that they're definitely holding back a bit to make sure we get an opener to coincide with the OS Clam Festival March 18, 19, 20

Bob R......

At one time anyone that wanted to pay could get a "commercial license" and dig wash tubs full.

I moved here in 1968....beaches were open "lots". I not really sure they were ever closed......day dig, night digs.....just not many people digging per tide, because of the wide openings of days to dig.

Yeah, when I first moved here (1978) you could go whenever you liked. Limit was 1st 15, but comm. licenses were available. I know of comm. crabbers that would buy a comm. license and harvest clams for bait. There are more people now, but # of digs and amounts of clams have been good for us until this shutdown. Mocrocks soon, hopefully. Bob R

Except I got exactly 1. Haven't struggled like that in a decade. Too much swell against not enough tide. Bummer because the weather was pretty good other than a little breezy.

Left Moclips at about 3:00 brown scum was so thick even if there had been any shows you couldn't see them. Went a few clicks south and ended up with a quick but had to work for limit. Lots of emty bags but digger in the know all got the job done. Wonder about the brown/green scum thing, I had never seen it that thick before and why the huge difference between Moclips and ROOSEVELT less than 2 miles away? Very good quality clams though

Pure nutriment for the filter feeders... good for healthier, fatter clams down the road.

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 03/06/16 02:49 PM

....and we can also hope that it is indicative of near shore feed conditions for the copepods, etc that are critical to nutritional needs of out-migrating salmon and steelhead smolts

The brown surf is talked about at 4:15 in the clam digging video posted earlier in the thread. No answer for your question about the differences in nearby beaches though. Might impact your digging, but won't impact your digestion.

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 03/07/16 12:03 PM

Melanie and I got 9 and 10 respectively on Saturday, skipped Sunday as wind and rain were forecast to be worse. 1st time in I can't remember how long that we haven't limited out. Tough conditions with only a handful of folks out of the hundreds we saw with limits. Toughed it out 'till the tide change, but rarely enough time to see shows. We had enough to bake stuffed clams for dinner on Sunday, with enough left over for spaghetti and clams tomorrow. We still have some vacuum sealed from the last dig, but looking forward to some morning digs soon. Bob R

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 03/08/16 05:22 AM

How does one stuff a clam if you don't mind sharing. Sounds interesting especially if there's some crab involved.

Re: Clam report, Clam report - 03/08/16 06:12 AM

I love sharing recipes from my time in a lovingly large Italian family. For Italian stuffed clams oreganod (sp.?); Clean clams and shells. Cut out all remaining material inside shells to make shells clean. I split the shells into respective halves. Lightly oil inside of shells. I put necks between a layer of clear wrap, and pound lightly to tenderize them. No need to do this to diggers. Don't forget to harvest the abductor muscles carefully, best scallops around! I save these sometimes to cook separately as they are a true delicacy in their own right. To make stuffed clams chop clams into small pieces, finely chop garlic, season with salt, pepper, oregano, mix in flavored bread crumbs (I like a lot more clams then bread crumbs in mine), add olive oil (or melted butter, but olive oil is more traditional and healthier). Spoon clam mixture into shells in an even layer approx. an inch or so thick. Top with a light sprinkling of paprika (try smoked paprika!). Bake in a pre-heated 385 degree oven for 6 to 8 minutes or 'till bread crumbs are lightly browned. Serve with lemon . Presentation on this dish is awesome, a nice salad or oven warmed bread is good as a side.
I would hesitate on the crab as my feelings are that the crab will dry out in this application, adding them on top (drowned in butter) after would prob. work, but not everything is improved by the addition of crab (although I love crab dearly and I do use crab for stuffing other seafood). Enjoy! Bob R

Deep wasn't so much the problem as much as how VERTICAL the critters were laying today. Busted the first two clams with my typical 5-10 degree tilt of the tube.... sheered the top of the open side of the shells. I think the east wind must've been blowing their tops on a westward kilter.

Adjusted for a decidedly more vertical trajectory and VOILA! Perfect cores and NO MORE busted clams.

The upcoming dig is scheduled on the following dates, beaches, and low tides:
•May 6, Friday, 6:51 a.m.; -1.5 feet; Long Beach
•May 7, Saturday, 7:39 a.m.; -2.0 feet; Long Beach

•May 11, Wednesday, 10:55 a.m.; -0.9 feet; Mocrocks
•May 12, Thursday, 11:49 a.m.; -0.3 feet; Mocrocks

Ayres recommends that diggers arrive at the beaches an hour or two before low tide for best results. However, digging is not allowed on any beach after noon with the exception of Mocrocks on May 12, when digging will be allowed for an extra hour, until 1 p.m., due to the later low tide
